Hi
I have a need to replace all our Synergy 3820C CNA's with new 4820C CNAs across all 12 of our SY480 compue modules (running VMware 7.0 U3. As I'm using virtual MAC addresses, is it just a case of put each host into maintenance mode, shutting down and removing the host and then replacing the hardware?
Is there anything to do within OneView 'server profiles' or 'server hardware' sections once the new hardware is fitted, or should it all get automatically detected and configured.
many thanks
C

SolutionIt's a little more complicated because the new CNA will generate a new server hardware type. Ensure you have a recent HPE OneVersion version (absolutely later than 8.0 at a minimum or the latest 6.60.xx LTS) and an appropriately validated and currently supported firmware SSP bundle.
Start by ensuring all the adapters and other components are clean and green.
- Enter Maintenance mode on the ESXi host, then shut it down
- Unassign the Server Profile (because as I mentioned the SHT will change)
- Remove and replace the mezzanine card
- Insert the compute module, wait for HPE OneView composer to finish the "Add" operation
- Worth inspecting the SHT page for the new one to ensure the CNA was recognized (and that subsequent compute modules get associated with that same new SHT automatically)
- In the server profile, change the SHT to the new one
- Inspect and if necessary modify the connections (if they were set to Auto or manually selected)
- If necessary, change the firmware baseline
- Assign the profile back to it's compute module hardware
- Boot ESXi
- Optionally check the network interfaces (at ESXi ssh shell if you want)
- Exit Maintenance mode in ESXi

cheers

Re: Synergy CN3820C replacement
@DanCernese Hi Dan
Just a further quick question on this - when the profile is unassigned, does that mean that virtual WWPN assigned will change when the profile is reassigned? All the storage is presented over FC and therefore the array and switch zoning will need to be reconfigured if the WWPNs are changed as part of this procedure.
Secondly, is the creatation of the SHT automatically done by OneView and I simply just need to select it from the dropdown box in the server profile?
I guess once all the hosts are updated then can I also edit the server profile template to use the new SHT so everything shows as consistent?
kind regards
Caden

Re: Synergy CN3820C replacement
Honestly, I don't know what happens to the storage WWNs when you swap SHT & ports. (and yes, the SHT is an automatic thing, you just choose it).
