Synergy Service pack Backward compatibility for HPE synergy compute nodes

Good morning all.

I am currentlly in the process of planing Synergy infrastructure and compute upgrades.

What I would like to know is was level of backward compatibility there is for firmware levels in SY480 GEN 10 compute modules in Frames that have had composer and Frame/VC firmware upgrades.

We are planing on upgrading the composer to 6.6.02 with Synergy service pack 2022.11.1 on the Frame and VC. The compute nodes are currentlly on 2021.11.1 as they are running Vmware esxi 6.7u3 . Will that level of firmware be compatible with the upgraded  composer and virtual connects or will an upgrade to a newer version be required.

The blades will be upgraded to 7 but we would like to do the other upgrades first to avoid delaying the upgrades unnecessarilly as it could be some time before that happens.

Thanks for the info.

Re: Synergy Service pack Backward compatibility for HPE synergy compute nodes

The compatibility is defined on the supported releases table overview page:

http://www.hpe.com/info/synergy-sw-release-information

For versions that have rolled off the 1-year support, we update this historic table so you can plan a way forward:

HPE Synergy Management Combinations and HPE Synergy Service Packs (SSPs) - Historical View table.  However, it is clearly overdue for an update and we'll schedule that soon.  So in the meantime, I can confirm your plans.

Yes, SSP 2021.11.01 is indeed the best option for upgrading a VMWare ESXi 6.7 server to 7.0 and HPE OneView 6.60.xx was validated against that firmware bundle.  It's not shown on the overview simply because it has rolled off the active support list but you can use it to plan your upgrade. [EDIT:  I just checked, that combination is still shown on the overview as supported but will, in fact, be removed in an update early next month]  As a general rule, we test compatibility of updates within the 1-year support window (and sometimes beyond that when time allows).

You should update HPE OneView to the latest 6.60.02, update the infrastructure, then plan how you will choose to orchestrate the required new version of VMware vCenter, changing from VUM to vLCM (if you use them), and then managing a coordination of compute firmware on the adapters to match the new ESXi and OS drivers.. ..many people choose to do this by creating a new cluster in the new vCEnter and migrating workloads but there are countless variations.
