Uplink change

Good Day Community,

i would like to find out if anyone has done the following befor:

Client currently has a fan-out cable (4x10GB) connected to Q1 on his VC SE 100GB F32 Module.

The idea now is to replace the fan out cable with a 100G QSFP cable.

What would the least disruptive way be to go about this?

Thanks for any ideas or feedback

Stephen

Re: Uplink change

Hello @StephenHeinz ,

Swapping the transceiver with an HPE 100Gb QSFP28 may result in the uplink ports changing to an offline state.

To avoid this issue, install Virtual Connect module firmware version 2.3.0 (or later).

From the OneView Logical Interconnects page, perform the following steps sequentially:
1. Configure the affected uplink ports speed to 40Gb and FEC to None {40G, None}.
2. Configure the affected uplink ports speed to 100Gb and FEC to Auto {100G, Auto}.
3. Configure both the affected uplink ports speed and FEC to Auto {Auto, Auto}.

or

Reboot the Virtual Connect Module.

Re: Uplink change

Hi Sahana,

thank you very much for the feedback.

Just for clarification, i can just remove the current cable and QSPF and connect the new cable and afterwards perform the steps?

Is there any need to make other configuration changes on the uplink?

So this procedure can be performed without having downtime?

Regards

Stephen

Re: Uplink change

Hello @StephenHeinz,

Since the QSFP is hot-swappable, you can proceed with the above procedure without having any downtime.

Re: Uplink change

@StephenHeinz @Sahana_S  I'm a little confused by your answer. I asked essentially the same question in this post (albeit in my case I was asking about the VC SE 40g F8, not the 100G F32) and I got a completely different answer from an HPE employee who indicated that there WOULD be downtime: "you would need to change the uplink set from using 4*10G lanes to using a single 40G lane. This change may be disruptive, as it will require reconfiguring the network profiles and possibly causing a brief interruption to the network traffic."  In my case there would be no swapping of the QSFP, just a replacememnt of the fanout cable with a straigh-thrrough cable into a different port on my TOR switch which has a corresponding 40G QSFP.

In @StephenHeinz case it is even a bit more involved, since in order to use the VC SE 100GB F32 Module with a fanout cable connected via fanout cable at 4*10G in his current configuration as described, he would need to *have* used a 817040-B21  HPE Synergy 40GbE/4x10GbE/4x8Gb FC QSFP+ Transceiver, which obviously cannot do the 100G straight-through that he is now seeking for that he would need a 882251-B21 HPE SY 100GE/4x25GE/4x32GFC QSFP28 XCVR- so both a QSFP relacement *and* potentially an uplink settings reconfiguration (as indicated in the response I got) would be required to get to his desired end state.

It appears we have a difference of opinion on whether this type of operation is disruptive or not.  Has anybody out there actually DONE this and can speak definitively to what is the full impact of swapping from a 1 to 4*x fanout cable to a single straight-through uplink cable is on either a 40G or a 100G Virtual Connect SE Synergy environment?

Re: Uplink change

@PatrickLong thanks for your feedback.

We have the HPE 845408-B21 ready for the change.

It would be great to hear from someone that has actually performed this operation.

Like i said currently there is a fan out cable inplace going to a core switch, the new single 100G cable will be connecting to a new CX10000 switch.

Any feedback or advise will be appretiated.
