Hi all,
I'm looking after an rx4610 and the "fan fail LED" on the front panel has lit up. (continuously - not flashing) I know the box got hot over the weekend due to some A/C issues. However it now boots and runs just fine.
I consulted the manuals at: http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/manualCategory.jhtml?lc=en&pagetype=manual&prodId=rx4610733m51229&sw_lang=en
The user manual said:
Fan Fail LED (Amber) When flashing, it indicates a fan failure.
No mention of a continuous light. The service manual said:
Hot Swapping the 172 mm Fans
The four 172 mm cooling fans are mounted in pairs on each side of the chassis. You can hot-swap these fans without turning the server system power off. Each fan uses an amber LED located on the fan???s casing to indicate the fan has failed. If it is a failed fan, the amber LED will be illuminated on the front panel, and the amber LED on the failed fan itself will be illuminated. The individual fan LEDs may be seen through view-ports in the fan covers.
(Same deal with the 120 mm fans)
So, I cracked open the fan panels on the top and sides (with the power still on), and looked at each fan. They were all running OK and none of them had lit up the amber failure light.
Anybody know how to clear the fail LED? Is there a GSP equivalent that will switch off the fault light once an error log is viewed?
Thanks much,
Natasha

Solution
Some real life experience for you.
The fan could have been damaged by the heat, dust build up or many other things. It could however have simply come unplug.
If you are using ems, you should get an email about it with a url to check for details. Looks like you got that.
It is also possible that the GSP card itself is on the blink. That has happened to us, and when it was happening we got a number of messages about hardware failures that clearly were not happening.
In our case, we're talking PA-RISC servers, but there is a lot of common code and it is possible you have a GSP problem or Core I/O issue.
I'd run through diagnostics as follows:
dmesg
mstm
xstm(X Windows)
Excersize your components, especially your bus and I/O cards.
Report back anything that seems out of place.
Check the tightness of the plugs to your UPS.

Re: Fan fail LED lit
Hi Natasha,
I haven't worked on rx4610 but from knowledge i guess if you acknowledge the even logs in GSP it should bring the front pannel LED back to normal.
Go to GSP and go through the event logs and using "sl" (show logs) and then it will make things better.
