Internal SAS disk with solid yellow and green led...

Hi, I have HP support looking into this too but in the meantime...

I have a rx2660 with 8 internal 146GB SAS drives off a p400 controller. I have one RAID 1+0 array made of two disks...

As soon as I create a second RAID 1+0 array of the remaining 6 disks, one of those disks lights up - both yellow and green leds remain on and constant. If I delete the array, the lights go off...

I've never seen this before, but all the other servers I have happen to have 1 RAID 1+0 array and 1 RAID 5 array...so I have no experience with a server with 2 RAID 1+0 arrays...

HP have replaced the p400 controller - no difference...

From a software perspective (11iv3 in this case), everything looks perfect - sautil/saconfig output shows everything perfectly...

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

You already replaced the controller but did you check the disk itself? Is it the same disk that lights up with the old and the new controller?
Try creating a RAID5 array with the 5 remaining disks and leave that one disk out and see if the problem goes away. Or try creating a RAID0 array (no redundancy) with only that single disk in it and see if the problem narrows down to that disk or bay. Is that disk new or was it used before and has array configuration on it?

Get detailed status information with sautil, e.g.

# sautil /dev/ciss4

(use the correct ciss device!)

I think its safe to say after some years of experience with these disks and configuration.

The disk with the yellow light is dead or dying.

Try removing the disk and re-inserting it, but this will most likely not work.

Then replace the disk.

I would have thought HP hardware would have suggested disk replacement prior to the much more expensive step of replacing the disk controller.

I have seen this before and took the exact action I am recommending.

I apologise - I should have mentioned in my original post that I had already tried swapping out this disk - same problem. I was trying to be thorough with the details on the original post and omitted that part.

Although it's not that unfeasible that the replacement disk was bad too :)

I like the suggestion of trying to re-create different array types and seeing what happens then, so I might see if I can try that. The only problem there is the current logical drive now has data on it...which I am trying not to loose.

I'm about to call HP and see what their latest suggestion is.

Any other ideas welcome...

After a lot of backward and forwarding, HP swapped the back-plane at which point the controller lost contact with all the installed physical drives - but re-installing the old back-plane with a 2nd new controller seemed to do the trick!

Everything came up fine and no "extra" led's on any disks...

Very weird - but it's "fixed" now...
