Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

A final hint:

If you have installed your OS on RAID and want to know what disks to use for LVM mirrors, this command will show you what you have:

# sasmgr get _info -D /dev/sasd0 -q raid

Fri Apr 25 11:53:50 2008

---------- PHYSICAL DRIVES ----------
LUN dsf SAS Address Enclosure Bay Size(MB)

/dev/rdsk/c1t0d0 0x500000e013712345 1 6 70007

0x500000e013712345 1 8 70007 PRIMARY ONLINE

This hint is for free, not for points ;-))

Hope this helps!

Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

Pete,

Your rx3600 system probably has a hardware raid card.

Though I love mirror/ux and lvm mirroring, its better for performance to use hardware raid and just present the disks to the system.

The raid card has a cpu and a subsystem and provides better i/o performance than mirror/ux

"Your rx3600 system probably has a hardware raid card."

See

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12595_div/12595_div.HTML

If you order a system with linux, the server *must* have a RAID card (and can be used for hp-ux, if it is a P400) - in case of a P600 it can be only used with linux or windowz. HP-UX and VMS can also use the default built-in, linux and win... cannot.

I know, it's difficult.

Hope this helps!

Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

Torsten ( or anybody ),

I was just going back through and checking to make sure everything was set up the way I thought it was. I discovered that I had managed to create my RAID volume on disks 1 and 2, but loaded my OS on disk 4.

I used sasmgr to delete the RAID volume and would now like to re-create it utilizing disk 3 and 4. Is this possible or will I end up destroying the OS that is already loaded on disk 4? The manual doesn't seem to say.

Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

-OR-

should I just give up on the hardware raid and use LVM mirroring?

I'm pretty sure it would destroy the OS install.

Why not just re-create the RAID volume on disks 1 and 2 and then just use the drd command built in to 11iv3 to create a copy of the boot disks on the RAID volume then boot off that... that way you get to learn about the (excellent) drd command at the same time!

See manuals here:

Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

Hi Pete,

while creating the RAID the data will get lost.

DRD sounds like an ideal solution.

Just create the clone and activate (boot) it.

Hope this helps!

Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

Hmmmm. Oh, yeah, I guess I didn't tell you about that part. I had some issues with Fortran and was forced to install 11iV2 (11.23) instead. I believe that removes DRD from the picture.

What Fortran issues?
DRD works on 11.23:

Re: Itanium Familiarization Cookbook?

The fortran issues were semantical in that my license was for B3907DB Fortran for workstations. Since 11iV3 doesn't offer workstation support, there is no B3907DB for 11iV3 and the official answer was to go to 11iV2.

I still think my fortran license should be convertible to B3909DB so I can go to 11iV3, but that's a continuing debate between HP and I - nothing we need to get into here.

Thanks for the hint on 11iV2 DRD. I couldn't remember and hadn't had time to check.

Is it the same price?

We use to have workstation and server versions of C and aC++. They were the same price per language. We then removed all 4 and combined C and aC++ into B9007AA.

Kind of hard to tell since they don't sell the workstation flavor anymore, but I think so. I've got people from HP and from my VAR who are looking into it. We'll see what they come up with.

The amazing thing to me is that you can go to http://www.hp.com/go/fortran and there is a download link where you can download versions for V1, V2, and V3!!!

You have to be a DSPP company member.

Which means you have to click on the "sign up for free membership" link on the download page - not too tough. I was already signed up so I downloaded both v2 and v3 bundles.

I thought it was tough?, not just any riff-raff can be a "company" member. :-)

The Fortran page does say: You must purchase an actual license.

For C/C++ you have to be a "company" member.

I didn't even see that! Fortunately, I just happen to have one.
