HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

My IE browser has been hijacked by these viruses/trojans and despite McAfee and installing Windows updates, it's still not getting rid of them. I read somewhere that you need to get into the Registry Editor but I'm not sure how to do this. Can somebody please help? Thanks!

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

In order to fix this easily you need to download a few programs.

Hijack This:

http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/

CWshredder

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

Adaware 6.181

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

and Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

The first two are small and will fit on a floppy if you can't use your PC. Before running either, close all windows, right click on the Explorer Icon on your desktop and select Properties then select Delete Cookies and tell it OK. When that finishes hit Delete Files (check the box in front of Delete Off-line Content and tell it OK). This one can take a while to finish be patient.

Now run install the CWShredder and let it check your system. If it asks you if a file name is random, write down the file name and tell it NO then ask us. You can always run the program again and say Yes if need be.

Now run Hijack this and copy the output and post it here and we will tell you which ones to check.

Once you do this you should be able to download the other two programs. Install AdAware first and make sure you get the updates. Run it and tell it ro remove anything it finds.

Now do Spyware S&D 1.3 and let it run. It shouldn't find much but you want to tell it to remove the junk it finds.

Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let it check your system for needed updates. You don't need the .net updates nor the multiple language stuff but you should get all of the critical updates.

Finally get Zone Alarm (the free version) from www.zonelabs.com and install it so you are protected from some attacks and will be notified if something odd starts running on your PC.

A good virus scan is always a good idea.

If you need help with any of the programs come back and ask or you can visit some of the forums on http://tomcoyote.com/

Hi Ron,

Thanks so much for your help. This is the output file from Hijack this:

P/S: Why didn't McAfee prevent these viruses when they have been discovered earlier on?

And tell HijackThis to remove them.

Then run it again and see if any of them come back. If they do boot into Safe Mode and use explorer to delete the files that are being called in the RUN lists. Example:

C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

After you have killed off everything you can then run ad aware and spybot SD 1.3 and run hijackthis again and post your output again.

As for why McAfee lets them in. In most case it didn't. Some of these were provided by Dell and are harmless but they are not standard so they get flagged. Others are installed with your printer or with other purchased software and are usually harmless. Many of the others came because you installed them. You installed kazaa which brought in a few then realplayer then probably some program which claimed to save your passwords or "optimize" your browsing. You should uninstall kazaa and install kazaa lite instead. Has all of the good features and none of the bad. RealPlayer is OK after you run adaware or spybot and remove the spyware. Be very careful about installing any free programs. Google their name and see if someone like ComputerCops or BugPatrol has something to say about them.

Also you probably have not kept your Microsoft Operating System uptodate and you are not running a firewall. Definitely get the free version of zone alarm. By the way were you able to run CWShredder?

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

Hi Ron,

So far everything seems to be working well, so fingers' crossed, everything should be okay again. I can't thank you enough for your help! Here's the hijackthis log again.

By the way, I did run CWShredder but it didn't find anything.

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

You still have two nasties:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysUpd] C:\WINDOWS\sysupd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [onivywwhg] C:\WINDOWS\System32\zepzqy.exe

If they won't go away with hijackthis then boot to safe mode with F8 and go in and delete them manually. You will probably have to tell Explorer that you want to view hidden system files. Tools/Options/View and click the show hidden files and folders and unclick Hide System Files.

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

I'm also suspicious of both of these. The first one might have been added by your google search stuff but it's hard to tell. The second one will probably bring up a different page from the usual 404 URL not found with a bunch of suggested links for different categories. No telling where it would take you or what it would do if you click on the links.

Also you should uninstall kazaa.

http://www.imilly.com/kazaa.htm

Control Panel / Add/Delete Software then find Kazaa and remove it or there may be a remove button from Start / (New)Programs /Kazaa

There is also a program that remove kazaas and all its nasties but I think it currently has a bug so you may need to use another program lspfix to finish the job. Get it before you use the kazaa removal tool.

http://www.isecurity.org.uk/html/downloads.html

Beside with the music industry suing everyone for downloading music files do you really want them on your PC?

If you still want the service then there is a program called diet k which removes most of its nasties and still allows the program to work.

http://www.dietk.com/

See: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/12/08/kazaa_shuts_down_kazaa_lite/

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

Thanks Ron! I've decided to get rid of Kazaa but it wasn't clear in your last response whether it's sufficient to just use the Windows Add/Remove Programs function to delete Kazaa. I've done that but do I still need to download the programs that you suggested?

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

I'm glad that you removed Kazaa. It probably wouldn't have worked anymore anyway without being reinstalled cause we killed off some of its nasties in the first round of hijack this. Let me see your current hijack this log. That should tell us if we have anthing left that we need to worry about but I expect we got most of it. Once we decide that the hijack this log is clean then you should go in and check everything that is left and tell it to exclude them from the check. Then the next time you run hijack this you will only see new stuff.

Have you run AdAaware or Spybot S & D 1.3 yet? Spybot has a neat feature it calls immunize where it puts fake entries in your registry to fool the spybots into thinking that you already have them installed.

You should also get Zone Alarm working on your PC. That will prevent hackers and worms from attacking you from the outside and also notify you if you have a program that wants to go out to the internet. Then you can decide if you think it needs to use your bandwidth for its own use.

Ron

PS. I appreciate the thought but go a little easier on the points. You should save the 8-10 points awards for a final closeout of the question because that brings up the Bunny which is supposed to mean that the problem is solved. 5 points is enough for intermediate steps.

Also I'll be on a trip starting Monday morning for a week and I don't know if I'll be able to get on line before I get back.

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

Your log looks clean. You might want to run hijack this again and check everything and tell it to exclude the checked items from the next scan. That way, the next time you run it you will only see new stuff.

Adaware and Spybot S&D do pretty much the same thing in different ways. Sometimes one will catch something that the other misses so I like to run both. I also like the immunize feature on spybot.

One other program you might like is EMS Freesurfer. This is basically a popup killer (and works very nicely!) but also has a feature which locks your homepage.

Re: HELP! How do I get rid of JS/IEstart.gen.d, HTML/Debeski and VBS/Psyme trojans???

Cameron,

Please start a new thread. It is a lot of work to check a HijackThis log and if you don't have your own thread you can't assign any points.

Also it would help if you would tell us what problem you are having and what operating system you are running. Did you already run CWShredder?

Yen, Ron:
I have a similar problem with trojans. Could someone tell me which files from the hijackthis output should be fixed? log file is attached.
Thanks,
Teles

Brandon, I will be glad to help you with your Hijackthis problem but please start a new thread by clicking on the New Message button. It's a lot of work to sort through these and if you don't have your own thread you can't pay me back by awarding points which is how the forum works.

to get rid of that vbs/psyme is is to run a dos scan in safe mode and turn off restore.run 3 times back to back and it will be gone, good luck
