Intyernet Explorer no longer works

Intyernet Explorer no longer works

I have a problem with Internet Explorer v6, after contracting some dodgy virus, I can no longer view web pages.

Already I know the answer: I installed Netscape 7.2 Cant believe i'd never used it before, its the best Browser...

However, I have changed certain registrys which ha unlocked the Tools/options menu, I have also unlocked the homepage which got greyed out, I have updated all my Mcafee definitons, run various spybot and mcafee scans and found lots of virus', still it refuses to find any web pages...

Any ideas except reinstalling IE, XP or SP2???

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

Hi

I know you had mentioned that you dont to re-install, however here are a few tips in case if you plan to re-install you might need the following detail

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "X or old".
Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.
Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.
Open "X or old" folder and paste the files.
You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

Once everything is working u can remove this folder X or old.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

Thank you Gopi, its not a major problem as Netscape serves my means.

I will probably need to reinstall some stage, I am working around it if possible.

Once again, thank you for your advice/support

Run HijackThis

Scan your system and Save the Log. Post it here. It may tell us what is wrong.

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

I will say with a certain amount of apprehension, I appear to have sorted it!!
Tonight I downloaded Service Pack 2 for XP Pro and now IE is back to normal.
I too believed that SP2 surely couldnt work entirely for me, without hitch, but so far I am counting my lucky chickens...
Its taken a while but now I have a good restore point and windows i see has its own firewall..anyone know how i could test to see its strengths?

Thank you Ron for offering advice and your help, and thank you Gopi as well.

I will remain a user on here and hopefully oneday offer someone my painfully learnt advice.

Thanx again

Carl

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

This was the cause of your problem:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.c.worm.html

You might want to check that SP2 got rid of it by running HijackThis again. If you see any lines with teekids.exe or dxopengl.exe
or any of the names mentioned in the article you should check them and then hit Fix Checked. I expect Symantec has a blaster removal tool too.

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

Thanks Ron, I said that it was fixed, well tonight my whole internet went down. I will check the Symantec site for a removal tool ASAP. I have noticed this Teakids registry and there are more than one opengl etc...

Thanks again for your advice and for checking out my hijackthis log.

Cheers

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

You may be able to go back to an earlier restore point. If that doesn't work and the blaster removal tool doesn't help you can try winsockxpfix.exe.

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

HiJackThis will run from a floppy so it is also an option. Post the results here and I'll look at it as soon as I can.

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

I deleted every entry I could find with dxopengl.exe, it appears in my msconfig/startup list about 4 times...I tried goin into regedit to delete them, there were lots of them. Every time i go back into regedit, they reappear even after deletion?? They seem to recreate unless i can find the source. At the moment I am on the internet, but it sometimes goes when i shut down and also effects: NoBrowserOption in the registry. I have downloaded regclean and will reboot in a moment and see if it still effects my IE6. I downloaded the fixblaster tool, i dont think its related, I had that virus before, about a year back...

thanks again though Ron

Re: Intyernet Explorer no longer works

OK i have cracked it, it was easy in the end. I went onto a site by Panda Software, it offered an online virus scan over the web. All it does is install an activex piece of software and then proceeds to scanning your entire PC for infections, it found 4 different virus' and deleted all of them. I have attached the report. Needless to say I have downloaded their Titanium 2004 Anti-virus package and will be purchasing it as well. They did something that Mcafee, Zone Alarm, Spybot & Norton couldnt...

Thanks again for all your help, especially you Ron.

Cheers
