Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

I recently had to go through and reload the OS on a Windoze machine and now I have a problem with NS that I need some input on.

Prior to doing my reload, I thought far enough ahead to move all of my user files and settings from the Netscape/Users folder. My intention was to simply point the new load of NS to the existing user files and have it use them as previous versions have done, but it seems as if this is no longer an option.

I now have managed to get my bookmarks and some of my other basic information into my new load of NS, but I have yet to be able to make it recognize my old mail files and folders. I never thought I would have this type of problem so I didn't think it would be required to send it all to myself instead of simply saving the local files/folders.

Can someone out there point me toward the correct procedures for bringing in the mail databases and files/folders?

I have to believe that there is a way to do it. I can't see why they would allow me to read them with notepad but not be able to bring them back into a new load of NS.

Can any of you assist?

Thanks!

John,

You might check this out:

I am using Netscape v7.1 (mainly for the HP forums), but not for email. I have not used Netscape for email since ver.4.8, so I have never tried to import ver.7x data.

Please let us know.

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

John collier,
It's been awhile! I hope all is well!
I move my user data in my Netscape 4.x as following:

c:\>Program Files\Netscape\Users\john
I copy and paste the folder John
Open the Netscape Massenger and read your emails!

I presume you have setup your email as POP3 to download them locally. If the setup is IMAP4, they'll stay in the server!

Have not tried it on 7.x

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

Jay,

I just read over the page that you referred me to. It looks more promising than anything else that I have read so far.

I am at work right now and the machine that I need to do this on is at the house. When I get a chance, I will give it a try and I'll let you all know the results.

The bunny may very well be yours based on what I have read ;-)

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

When I installed Netscape 7.1, (with no previous Netscape installed on that PC), I must have chosen "no email", I don't remember exactly. It seems after ver.7x is installed, there is no way to change your mind and configure email after all. It looks like one needs to reinstall Netscape in order to add the mail client. If this is correct, it is certainly a bit cumbersome.

As I said earlier, I use Netscape v7.1 mainly for HP Forums. I like to have five tabs, each with a different forum. For email, we run MS Exchange, so Outlook is the client for that.

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

Latif,

It has been a long time. All things considered, I guess things haven't been doing too badly for me. After all, we all have our challenges in life, don't we?

Much like you, all of my previous experience has been with NS 4.x and I have NEVER had a problem with getting things transferred from one load to the next with that version. It's this new and improved version that is giving me the headaches ;-(

My next question would be "Why does improving something always seem to mean that it has to be more complicated to accomplish the little things like this?" but I guess that I'm smart enough to know that I will never get a good answer to that question.

Thanks for the reply. It's nice to hear from you again.

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

Jay,

It's official. You are the winner of this little contest ;-)

I don't know exactly how to thank you for this. I was about to give up on Netscape (which was something I truly didn't want to do) because I really needed to have an application that could be flexible enough for me to be able to move things from one place to another and this one was about to convince me that it wasn't it.

I really appreciate what you have done for me. I hope others will benefit from this down the line as well.

BTW, I don't remember an option that allows a person to skip the e-mail install so I doubt that all is lost if you want to experiment with their mail client. I won't swear that there isn't a way to skip it, but I just don't remember it. Keep looking!

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

John,

Thanks for those kind words.

The Netscape Unofficial FAQ has helped me a few times over the years. It is the best source of Netscape info I have found.

I am quite sure you have pointed me in the right direction with my IE6 home page security problem. This has been the kind of problem that does not really require an immediate fix, but has been a low-level aggravation for some time.

This just shows the value of the HP Forums as an IT information network!

Jay,

I could not agree with you more.

This is the best place I have EVER found to brainstorm and get issues resolved.

Thanks again for your help!

Everybody, please consider this thread officially closed. Any further posts to it will be rewarded with a nice, big, fat Zero for points ;-)

Re: Where are the Netscape 7.x gurus?

I think it would be a good idea if a thread's author could actually close the thread, making subsequent replies impossible. Nothing is more annoying than having someone reply to a thread which has been dormant for a year.

With a "close thread" button, people would be forced to copy-and-paste the old thread's URL into their own post, where they would be able to assign points to those who reply.

This has been suggested before. I wish they had built this feature into the recent conversion.
