E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Hi, Is there any way to control the E-MSM430 AP 2.4G singal supports G mode only instead of supports B/G/N at the same time?

As the AP is located in a "dirty" area...many other wifi signal around.....and we would like to take out the B mode to enchance the performance. Tks.

You can try to disbale the low rates that the B work on, under the VSC you will find an option for the wireless rates, try disabling anything from 11 and below this should perevent any B client to connect, also will prevent any client to connect if the rates reaching is is 11 and below.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Bruce,

All you have to do is change the radio settings for your MSM and you can restrict it to broadcasting wireless G only.

To reduce the wireless mode to 2.4 G only:

1. Sign into your MSM

2. Navigate to Wireless > Radio(s)

3. Select 802.11g from the Wireless Mode drop down list

4. Click Apply

See page 50 in the MSM4xx Access Points Management and Configuration Guide for more info:

Hi Soliman,

According to your suggestion, I had tried but not able to remove b mode at all. User still able to connect with B mode, which will affecting the performance compare to G only.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Hi John,

There is no way to slect g mode only from my MSM760.....the only selection at 2.4G radio is b/g/n all together.

Any idea?

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

There does not appear to be a way to configure this setting from the controller.  The controller only displays the settings of the AP's.

You should connect to the AP directly and configure the setting change with the steps I provided above by using the Radio Configuration page.  You can access the management tool interface by typing the IP Address of the AP into your browser.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Hi John,

Do you mean I can't configurate the E-MSM430 at controller with control mode? So what I have to do after that? Just plug into the network under E-MSM760 ? Tks.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Hi John,

Just try to follow your instruction to setup my E-MSM 430 to g-mode only....but no luck.

It shows the same pull down menu as E-MSM760.....no g mode only....only b/g/n can be selected.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Bruce,

See page 3-18 of the Management and Configuration Guide for the MSM4xx AP.

Here you will see that the only two supported wireless modes are 802.11 n/a and 802.11 n/b/g.  Unfortunetly it does not appear that it is possible to configure the device to broadcast in 802.11 g only mode : (  I cant explain why you cannot see atleast the n/a as another option.

It looks like you will need to aquire one of the following models to use G only:

MSM310

MSM320

MSM335

MSM410

MSM422

Sorry for not catching this sooner.  With the proper device you should be able to display and configure everything from the controller since you mentioned you are in controlled mode.  The fact that you were not seeing other options was throwing me off.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Hi John,

I mean I can see the A/N mode and B/G/N mode but I was asking how can I change the 2.4G mode from B/G/N to G only. So...may be misunderstanding........anyway tks for your help. :)

So strange that the E-MSM430 can't select b or g only instead of b/g/n all together.........in my case, we want to offer 5G A/N for new laptop users and G only for old laptop users.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Go to your VSC -> Virtual AP -> Allowed Wireless Rates and uncheck under 802.11b (1,2,5.5,11). Save VSC and synch your AP.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Disbaling the rates won't work, it will give you an error mentioning that you have to keep at least 1 rate for B.

I tried everything from my side but it seems it cannot be done :)

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Last thing you can try:

1. Make sure your VSC is bound to only MSM430/MSM460/MSM466 APs (no MSM410 or MSM422)

2. Download config file, do a search for your VSC name and you will find this section under it:

<WIRELESS>
    forwarding = ENABLED
    dtim-count = 1
    arp-broadcast-filtering = DISABLED
    dhcp-broadcast-filtering = DISABLED
    band-steering = DISABLED
    advertise-tx-power = DISABLED
    l2-fast-auth = DISABLED
    l3-mobility = ENABLED
    l3-mobility-hns-method = VLAN_BASED
    l3-mobility-hns-fallback-method = NONE
    vsc-state = DISABLED
    min-data-rate = 1000000
    max-data-rate = 54000000
    rate-80211b = 1:DISABLED
    rate-80211b = 2:DISABLED
    rate-80211b = 5.5:DISABLED
    rate-80211b = 11:DISABLED

modify the  therates to disabled:

    rate-80211b = 1:DISABLED
    rate-80211b = 2:DISABLED
    rate-80211b = 5.5:DISABLED
    rate-80211b = 11:DISABLED

save file and upload to your controller.

Do this at your own risk, i had MSM410 and MSM422 that DID NOT synch after this but the MSM430 and MSM460 synched ok.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

Anyone else tried this solution and can give some feedback? I have several msm460's and approx. 15 ssids where I want to disable the use of 802.11b. This is the only solution that i believe might work.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

I have the same issue that I wish to resolve.  I’ve tried modifying the config file but 80211b rate is already listed as disabled.

I find it strange that the MSM430 access point doesn’t have the option that lower models have.

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

The question was asked several years ago. Here is an answer:

In Controlled Aps go to radio management
select your AP model
in your 2.4 Ghz Radio settings > Advanced wireless settings set Multicast Tx rate: to 6.0 Mb/s
1, 2, 5.5 and 11 Mbs are 802.11b rates.
6, 9, 12 to 54 are 802.11g rates
etc

also for a VSC in Virtual AP section > Allowed wireless rate
 in 802.11b+g and 802.11n  uncheck 1, 2, 5.5 and 11
Synchronise your AP

You can verify by making a wifi capture with wireshark that in your beacon, in 802.11 radio information, PHY type now is 802.11g
and minimum data rate is 6.0 Mb/s

Re: E-MSM430 2.4G Selection

I've completed the steps, changed the multicast tx rate for MSM430 and MSM460 to 6.0 Mb/s, than i want to uncheck  1, 2, 5.5 and 11. than i want to save the vsc settings and get the error:

"At least one of the rates for 802.11b must be enabled."

Anyone a fix? my controller firmware is 6.6.4.0-23010
