mesh link ap interface

when setting up a mesh link. does the slave ap need the interface set to port 1 or mesh link. If the latter how is the AP provisioned? does it need to be interfaced to port 1 to do this?

 

or do you provision it 1st with port 1 then once provisioned switch it to mesh?

 

any ideas
