There was a 4T disk error which bothered me for many days.
We team borrowed a same disk and replaced the error one, then the new disk light showed green.
But the MSA 2050 Still showed RAID 5 not available, the new disk could't rebuild automatically.
We tried to add Global Spare by the "Pool theme", but to our surprise, "Add disk group" option couldn't be selected.
In the "System theme" panel we can find the disk which group was not assigned with 0 spare, other normal two disks had added group dgA01, and added into pool A.
To the MSA system, i'm a freshman, could your technical experts can give me some assist?

Re: A RAID 5 4T disk erro of MSA2050
Hi @Ioiris ,
The new/replacement disk seems to have metadata information from different array on it.
As I understand there are 2 x dgA01 disk groups showing up in SMU after installing the replacement disk and new dgA01 disk group is appearing in quarantine state.
The new disk should appear in available state for it to be configured as spare.
If the new/replacement disk has created a ghost QTOF dgA01 disk group, I would suggest to reach out to reseller and procure a new disk which doesn't have any old metadata information on it.
You could share the output of below commands launched from putty SSH session to validate whether a ghost / duplicate disk group is appearing:
show disk-groups
show disks
show pools
The show frus command output will help you identify the serial number of the MSA. The serial number listed under CHASSIS_MIDPLANE would be the MSA serial number.

The uper pictures were the SMU indication after we removed the issue one and replaced the same disk.
It couldn't rebulid for unkown reason.
What's more,it seems the replaced disk has been set QTOF status.

SolutionHi @Ioiris ,
The replacement disk seems to have metadata information from old array in which it was used.
This has created a duplicate/ghost disk group dgA01 in the array.
Please remove the replacement disk as soon as possible and work with the reseller from whom replacement disk was procured to get a new disk with no metadata information in it. This reduces any risks to existing pool due to duplicate disk groups.

Re: A RAID 5 4T disk erro of MSA2050
OK, thanks for suggestion.
I also suspected old data in it that caused the failure restore.
And i have a query, can i clear the metadata by SMU then use it to replace?
If it can be done, could you tell me the steps?
It showed QTOF after we insert the replaced disk.

Re: A RAID 5 4T disk erro of MSA2050
Hi @Ioiris ,
Deleting the quarantine disk group entry will require using advanced engineering commands.
Please log an HPE support case so that they could assist in deleting the quarantine disk group.
The chassis serial number could be identified by issuing the below command from putty SSH session:
show frus
The serial number listed under midplane would be the MSA array serial number.
