Compressing data on a MSA 2040

I enhertited a MSA 2040 when we started managing a remote site. Currently they have two virtual disk groups. One of them is totally allocated and the second one has about 3.8TB unallocated space. How can I use the unallocate space in disk group 2in disk group 1? If I can't use it without destroying data, would compressing the volume on the full disk group work? I'm open to suggestion on how to better manage this full disk group.

Thanks

Re: Compressing data on a MSA 2040

mikeh19d99 ,

With 2 Virtual pools (PoolA and PoolB) if diskgroup1 in Pool A is full and Diskgroup2 in poolB is having space , then there is no option to migrate unallocated space from PoolA to PoolB.

If the Diskgroup1 and Diskgroup2 is part of the same virtual pool , then there is no need to migrate space from one disk group to another , as the free space is calculated for the pool. The Pool will still show 3.8TB free/Avail space that can be utilized.

If the Disk groups are part of different pools (pooA and poolB)
Without destroying the pool , if you want to increase free space , then either you add new drives and create new disk group on the same pool to add space or delete unwanted data on the host end and free up space on the existing pool.

Since the post doesnt mention about the current configuration of the Pools or diskgroups, the above suggestions is a generic practice for virtual pool.
