Expanding storage on MSA 2060 FC

I've inherited management of an HPE MSA 2060 FC and need to expand the storage.

The current setup is 2 Pools (A & B), both pools have a single Disk Group in RAID5 with 3 physical disks, so 6 physical disks in total.

The two pools each have an associated Volume, both volumes are being accessed by 2 ESXi hosts (both hosts access both Volumes).

I would like to expand both of the pools, if I purchase another 6 disks can I simply add them to the existing RAID5 Disk Groups (3 in each) and expand the datastores in ESXi? If that isn't possible can I add a second Disk Group to each pool and have that expand the existing datastores in ESXi? I would like to avoid creating additional datastores if possible.

Does the answer change if the new disks are larger than the existing disks?

Sorry for the basic questions but I haven't used an HPE MSA before and my Google-Fu is failing me

Re: Expanding storage on MSA 2060 FC

Hi,

You could add more space to the Pool by adding a new disk group in Pool A and Pool B.
MSA does not allow expansion of existing RAID 5 disk groups.
However,  you could create a new disk group under each Pool to increase Pool capacity.
The volume expansion could be performed from MSA end and then data store could be expanded on ESXi.

To modify/Expand a virtual volume follow the below steps in SMU.
1. In the Volumes topic, select a volume in the volumes table.
2. Select Action > Modify Volume.
The Modify Volume panel opens.
3.In the Expand By field, enter the size by which to expand the volume.
4. Click OK.

You could use disks of larger capacity to create new disk groups.
However, for optimal performance disks of identical capacity and specification is recommended.

Some Google-Fu for you:
MSA 2060 Best practices:  https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/a00105260enw
MSA 2060 Virtual Storage Technical Guide:  https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/a00103247enw
In the Best Practices guide look for the Single vs Dual Pool considerations.
The MSA 2060 is 'difficult' to change the base configuration once deployed with standard RAID levels.  If you are willing to do more work/downtime you should look at the MSA-DP+ RAID level which allows more flexibility down the road (i.e. incremental expansion)
