HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
I had a MSA 2040 with 7 disks. 6 disks for data and 1 disk for Global Spares. I created a pool A with 6-disks group, type was virtual pool and raid 0+1 .
Now, i buy 5 new disks, same information, same type, same size ...
I want to expand this 5 new disks to pool A(virtual pool).
It is work ? How can do this?
Thank you

Re: HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
It's better if you can buy another same size same type drive. Then create new Virtual Disk Group. Then you need to add this new VDG to Pool A as per procedure below,
To add a disk group
1. In the Pools topic, select Action > Add Disk Group.
The Add Disk Group panel opens.
2. Set the options.
3. If you are creating a linear disk group, select the RAID [number] or SPARE option to determine if you will be selecting
disks for the RAID configuration or as dedicated spares for the disk group.
4. Select the disks.
5. Click Add.
If your disk group contains a mix of 512n and 512e disks, a dialog box displays. Perform one of the following:
яВв To create the disk group, click Yes.
яВв To cancel the request, click No.
If the task succeeds, the new disk group appears in the Related Disk Groups table in the Pools topic when you select
the pool for it in the pools table.
Hope this helps!

Re: HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
No that's not possible in Virtual Array that's why you can't expand VDG.
Expand concept only works in linear array and in Vdisk only
Hope this helps!

Re: HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
Let me explain the MSA architecture.
Collection of physical drives made VDG.
Then VDG gets added to Pool A or Pool B
After that you create Volume from Pool A or Pool B
This Volume actually holds all VMs at the host side. So it doesn't matter this Volume got space from which VDG. In a Pool it can be multiple VDG possible and space can get allocate from any VDG. This is MSA Virtualization unlike linear array where you know which physical disk responsible for which Vdisk so you know volume gets space from which disk drive.
My suggestion will be if you want to increase size of the Pool and planning to create new VDG then always try to create VDG with same number of drives, same type drives, and same size drives. Also try to keep RAID level also same for all same tier drives VDG. This will help to increase performance of the system.
One Pool can contain different drive type VDG as well. Like there can be FC VDG, SSD VDG and NL VDG.
Hope this helps!

Re: HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
now , I want to expand this 5 new disks . increase iosp that it will have better loading?
Ans: If you add this 5 drives under a new VDG but under same Pool then space and IOPs both will increase
i have two controller that i put new vdg to new controller b , is it better?
Ans: These new 5 drives with new VDG and new volume if you are planning to take care new VMs then it's good to plan them for Pool B so that load balance will happen. Otherwise if all VMs part of same Pool then all writes will happen primarily through Controller A only which may impact in performance
controller a and pool a is same item?
Ans: Technically its not same. But Controller A takes care of Pool A and Controller B takes care of Pool B
Hope this helps!

Re: HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
Please find the steps to disable VRSC or scrub for vdisk,
To configure background scrub for vdisks
1. In the Configuration View panel, right-click the system and select Configuration > Advanced Settings > System Utilities.
2. Set the options:
яВв Either select (enable) or clear (disable) the Vdisk Scrub option. This option is enabled by default.
яВв Set the Vdisk Scrub Interval (hours) option, which is the interval between background vdisk scrub finishing and starting again, from 0тАУ360 hours. The default is 24 hours.
3. Click Apply.
I wouldn't suggest to disable Vdisk Scrub option. Scrub actually what is does -> system continuously analyzes disks in vdisks to find and fix disk errors.
You have another scrub option for disks which are not part of vdisks as well.
To configure background scrub for disks not in vdisks
1. In the Configuration View panel, right-click the system and select Configuration > Advanced Settings > System Utilities.
2. Either select (enable) or clear (disable) the Disk Scrub option. This option is disabled by default.
3. Click Apply.
Any scrub option is important with respect to find drive errors and fix them.
Hope this helps!

Re: HP 2040 expand pool with new disk group
You better check for CLI option so look for below command from CLI guide where options are background-scrub and background-disk-scrub,
set advanced-settings
