HPE MSA 2060 16GB FIBRE CHANNEL SFF STORAGE

Hi, I am new to setting up HPE Devices and I need expert advice on setting up "HPE MSA 2060 16GB FIBRE CHANNEL SFF STORAGE" with 2 X HPE DL380 GEN10 8SFF for a client. Primarily please help me to understand what requirment gathering questions I should be asking the client from Storage perspective in specific and setting up HP Servers. I do have some knowledge on Servers and Storage, but not to the level of design.

Below are the equipment to be setup:

Server 1 : HPE DL380 GEN10 8SFF with 4 x HPE 600GB SAS 12G MISSION CRITICAL 10K SFF  and 2 x HPE         SN1100Q 16GB DUAL PORT FIBRE CHANNEL HOST BUS ADAPTER

Server 2 : HPE PROLIANT DL380 GEN10 8SFF with 4 x HPE 300GB SAS 12G MISSION CRITICAL 10K SFF SC and 1 x HPE SN1100Q 16GB DUAL PORT FIBRE CHANNEL HOST BUS ADAPTER

Storage Server: HPE MSA 2060 16GB FIBRE CHANNEL SFF STORAGE with 16 x HPE MSA 3.84TB SAS 12G READ INTENSIVE SFF (2.5IN) M2 3YR WTY SSD and 2x HPE MSA 16GB SHORT WAVE FIBRE CHANNEL SEP+ 4-PACK TRANSCEIVER.

Your beneficial inputs will be very valuable for me a Tec Free lancer.

Many thanks.

Re: HPE MSA 2060 16GB FIBRE CHANNEL SFF STORAGE

Hello,

Based on your post here are my assumptions.

  • You will be installing the servers as well as the storage array.
  • The customer supplied rack has space and power.
  • You have Fibre Channel SAN experience.
  • The customer has FC SAN experience.

Here are some questions.

  • Will this be a direct attached or switch attached configuration?
  • If switch attached; Are these existing or new switches?
  • Who will be responsible for zoning?
  • What operating system will be installed on the servers?
  • Do you know how to install and configure multipath software on the connected servers?
  •  How many volumes need to be created and attached to the hosts?
  • What are the volume sizes that need to be created?

Information you need to configure the system.

  • Network settings (IPv4, DNS)
  • Date and Time (NTP)
  • User definitions (local, LDAP)
  • Notifications (email, SNMP, syslog)
  • Disk group and pool creation
  • Creating hosts (naming initiators, assigning initiators to hosts)

Here are some useful documents:

Document - HPE MSA 1060/2060/2062 Installation Guide | HPE Support

Document - HPE MSA 1060/2060/2062 Storage Arrays Best Practices | HPE Support

Hopefully this helps

Hi,

Adding to msobers22's feedback which covers pretty much every thing:

Please refer to the below guides which should give you an idea on how MSA 2060 architecture works.

MSA 2060 Best practices guide:

https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/a00105260enw

MSA 2060 Technical reference guide:

MSA 2060 Hyper V implementation guide:

https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/a00119216enw

Please refer to the HPE SPOCK page for information on compatible FC HBA card firmware/drivers.

https://h20272.www2.hpe.com/spock/  Click on  Configuration set zip file on the left side menu and select HPE MSA 2060/2062 FC Storage

HPE MSA 2050/2052 Storage Configuration and Best Practices for VMware vSphere technical white paper:

https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/4aa4-7060enw

The above document is for previous generation MSA. However, it could still be used as a reference.

You may use the below web link to identify what could be the IOPS that could be expected from the configuration:

Re: HPE MSA 2060 16GB FIBRE CHANNEL SFF STORAGE

@msobers22

Hello msobers22,

  • You will be installing the servers as well as the storage array. - Yes
  • The customer supplied rack has space and power.- Yes
  • You have Fibre Channel SAN experience.- Basic understanding only. Your further inputs on physicall connectivity and configuration will help immensley
  • The customer has FC SAN experience.- No, they are using ISCI SAN with NetApp

Here are some questions.

  • Will this be a direct attached or switch attached configuration? - Direct Attached (Point to Point), as the Servers have HBA Cards in them. And the MSA 2060 storage has 2x HPE MSA 16GB SHORT WAVE FIBRE CHANNEL SEP+ 4-PACK TRANSCEIVER
  • If switch attached; Are these existing or new switches?- N/A
  • Who will be responsible for zoning? N/A, since no SAN switch will be used.
  • What operating system will be installed on the servers? 2 Servers will have Esxi 8.0 and 3 rd server will run Win Server 2022
  • Do you know how to install and configure multipath software on the connected servers? I understand multipath, but never got the opportunity.
  •  How many volumes need to be created and attached to the hosts? Client has no preference. They have asked us to suggested as per 16* 3.84TB SSD in the MSA 2060
  • What are the volume sizes that need to be created? Again we have to suggest to client. They will host 20vms and will be using veeam for backup to a Tape Library and Replication to a DR Site.

Information you need to configure the system.

  • Network settings (IPv4, DNS) - Client will provide as per their network segmentation
  • Date and Time (NTP) - to be done on site
  • User definitions (local, LDAP) - Mostly Local, as there will be only 2 administrators
  • Notifications (email, SNMP, syslog) - Email.
  • Disk group and pool creation - Again we have to suggest as per the number of disks and total capacity and which RAID is recommended.
  • Creating hosts (naming initiators, assigning initiators to hosts) - Host setup will be part of provisioning scope of MSA 2060, along with volme setup.

Many Many thanks,
