The MSA-DP+ RAID configuration does not use external spares. Spare capacity is deployed throughout the system on each drive.

MSA-DP+ does have overhead involved (parity + spare capacity) but there are numerous advantages. Such as: Faster rebuild, no idle drives, ability to incrementally expand, ...
