18 GB Ultra 3 Disk Drive with Netraid Embedded Ultra2 Compatible

Hi,

i have a Netserver LH4 with Embedded NetRaid Controller and Disk Drives 9 GB and 18 GB Ultra 2. I want to configure Raid 1 with 18 GB Drives, so i bought a 18 GB Drive with Ultra 3 what is backward compatible with Ultra 2 Controllers. My problem is that thisrive is not spinning correctly and its hanging my complete configuration. I cannot found any information about that problem with Ultra 3 Disk Drives. I setup the latest firmware on the controller. I want to setup now the Drives with the newest firmware.

Any other idea what the problem can be ?

Thanks for your support

Re: 18 GB Ultra 3 Disk Drive with Netraid Embedded Ultra2 Compatible

Ralf,

I would not be concerned about Ultra, Ultra2, Ultra3. This interface difference will not create problems on controllers. Next do not attempt to update "firmware" on newer hard drives, this is not allowed. This was an old technique that is no longer used. The only problem you could be having is:
a. the older 18GB is slightly larger than the new, but this is not probable.
b. You have mixed LVD and HVD drives together.

To help you with your problem we will need some better details of your symptoms. Please define what you mean by:
"spinning correctly" and "its hanging my complete configuration" .
Is the new drive recognized by the controller and available to the RAID configuration? Who did you buy the new drive from? and the Old?

Re: 18 GB Ultra 3 Disk Drive with Netraid Embedded Ultra2 Compatible

Ralf,

I ran across this document, which you might find useful:

http://www.netserver.hp.com/docs/download.asp?file=tp_ultra3.pdf

It explains Ultra 3 and how it interoperates with Ultra-2 SCSI. It mentions that you might have to set an Ultra-2 compatibility jumper on your Ultra-3 drive.

I hope this gets you going. If not, is it possible that this Ultra-3 drive is just defective?

Dave
