Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

I am getting ready to order a second Processor to my Netserver LC2000 server. Is this just a plug in and go processor like adding memory or is there any more configuring to do? Also, will this affect Windows NT Server that is currently running? I've never added a second processor to an existing machine.

thanks,
Lonnie

I seem to remember a multi-processor kernel for Windows NT. Maybe all versions of Server NT have it. Watch the messages when NT is loading, if it says something like "single processor" or "uniprocessor", then I'll bet the OS will not take advantage of your extra processor.

Re: Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

Thanks Malvin but i'm wanting to add a second processor. Since this a critical production email server i can't afford this system to go down for a long period of time. I'm just curious if i follow the instuctions you gave on installing a processor if i install the second one will the bios and operating system recogonize it.

thanks,

Re: Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

Lonnie,
The above is your concern. When NT is load on a single processor, it does not install the "kernal" that supports multi-processor. If I remember, MS support does have a way to get NT to load the correct kernal through some manual manipulation. But you need to have the kernal change in order for the OS to setup for any software that can use it.

Re: Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

If you want NT to add a second processor you can use either UPTOMP.EXE from the NT Resource Kit or a Compaq server support cd. I've only used UPTOMP. You will be asked which kernel to install (most likely halmps.dll). Have a good backup ready and be sure to get the right kernel for your system or it will lock while booting and the ERD won't fix it (trust me on that one!) For more information search the Microsoft knowledge base for UPTOMP.EXE. Good Luck!

Re: Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

Lonnie, all the replies to your message are excellent. You will need to use the Microsoft patch UPTOMP.EXE unless the MPS (Multiprocessor) kernel was selected during the original NT install. There is an HP technical document on this at:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=tis08922

Note: HP did not release any HP-specific kernels or HALs for the Netservers. Choose the generic MPS (Multiprocessor) when using UPTOMP.EXE or when installing NT.

I can't help with this problem, but I wanted to know if I could have a copy of your navigation CD. I have the same machine, but did not get a navigation cd with it and i cannot install an operating system to the machine. Ofcourse I am trying to get windows 2000 server for this. Do you know of anyone willing to sell theres also. please call me at 810-449-0513 if you can help or email me at halmorgan2@aol.com. If you know where I could get it online this would also help for the hp netserver lc 2000

Re: Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

Harold,

1. You do not need the HP Navigator CD to install any operating system on your Netserver.

2. The Netserver does not include any operating system - it does include an automated script for installing supported operating systems

All the necessary updates, drivers and software for your Netserver is available on the hp web site.

1. Go to www.hp.com
2. Select "Support & Drivers"
3. Select "Download drivers & softwareâ
4. Enter the desired Netserver model. Examples:
lh 3000
lc 2000

If necessary email Netserver support at:

nacmsupport@hp.com (include "Netserver" in the subject line to prevent delays in ro

Re: Adding a Second processor to an Netserver LC 2000

Hi Lonnie,

No one seems to have mentioned it so I thought I would chip in. Obviously you want to be sure that your second processor is the same as the existing one. Your best solution is to get a CPU with an HP part number matching yours. One thing to keep in mind is to be sure the cache size is the same as well. I've seen people get processors that were identical save for the cache size, who had problems.

Also, you will need another VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) when you add your CPU. Without it, the 2nd processor won't work. The part number for a new VRM is P1756-69006.

Mark is correct on all counts, and this is information you should know when adding a 2nd CPU to the Netserver LC2000/LC2000r.
