HP Netserver 5/166 LS2 Boot problems after HPDA

Need help with a boot problem we recently experienced with an old HP Netserver 5/166 LS2 when firing up the box you come to the point where "HPDA Controller Firmware 2.26" is displayed and then we receive an error stating the following:

Warning: 2 Logical drives not available!
Warning: Hard Disks at Chn 0, Slot 6; Chn 0, slot 5; chn1, slot1; chn1, slot 2; chn1, slot 3; chn1, slot 4; chn1, slot 5 have failed!

2 logical drives installed
Press any key to continue ...

after pressing any key it asks for me to insert a bootable media....

this server was workig fine we had the fan on the power supply fail and we shut down the box replaced the power supply and turned to box back on.... it booted fine with all drives available. The error above occured with a weekly maintanence reboot. Can anyone tell me what is going on here?? I cannot believe that all of these drives failed at the same time...... I ran the HP diagnogstics and everything checked out fine.

Re: HP Netserver 5/166 LS2 Boot problems after HPDA

Jeremy,

I would first start out by booting into the HPDA Configuration utility and checking all of your hard drives to make sure they are all responding and that no errors are reported on any of these hard drives. I would also attempt to flash the fw on your Mylex PCI HPDA to the latest. Both the Config Utility and FW are available here: http://h20004.www2.hp.com/keeper_rnotes/bsdmatrix/matrix62431.html

I would also recommend flashing the BIOS and booting into the server ECU to save and exit. You can get those files from: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNum=D3334A&prodName=hp+netserver+ls&locale=en_US&taskId=8418&taskName=download+drivers+%26+software&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=50458&prodSeriesName=hp+netserver+ls

I hope that helps.

Ciao,
Greg

hi
the message indicate that all drive are lost on both chanel , check if cables are well connected, check if cable are not inverted (chanel one vs chanel two).
start with jetset floppy and go to Array Configuration Utility
>>select the corect array controller
>>check if config is ok
>>press continue
>>select Tools
> here you can diagnose your problem

Re: HP Netserver 5/166 LS2 Boot problems after HPDA

OK... using the jetset tools I was able to reset the drives status from "Not Available" to normal.... both the onboard drives Chn 0 Logical drive 1 and chn 1 logical drive 1 were in a "Not Available" status. Changing them to normal fixed the errors that I was reporting above..... but the system will not boot.... it basically asks to insert a system disk.... I am going to try and do a repair from Win NT to possibly restore anything missing. Thanks for you help thus far!! If you have any other ideas I would appreciate it!

Re: HP Netserver 5/166 LS2 Boot problems after HPDA

After losing all of your hard drives if forcing them back online results in you booting up to anything other than you NOS, ie blinking cursor, BSOD or panics than you most likely have corruption in your parity stripe. Certainly nothing to lose by trying a repair disk but most likely you'll be looking at recreating the array, initializing the array and restoring from backup.

Sorry it didn't work out better this time..
