hpnport errors every 10 secs on LP2000R with NetRaid 4M

We are getting multiple errors in the NT System Event Log every 10 seconds for the HPNPORT device. It gives an error
"Event message could not be found, but contained these strings: \Device\HPN0, Drive 0:14:0 returning error" for each slot without a physical drive in it.

Any ideas on resolving this?

I would first check to make sure that you are at matching levels for the 4m Firmware, FAST utility and 4m Driver. I'm assuming NT 4.0 since you said NT event viewer. First update all of these files from: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/hpnetraid451936_swen.html

I checked the versions and they are all up to date.
I also posted this in the Business forums and someone suggested doing a rescan of the controller in FAST.
That stopped the errors but only until a server reboot.
I also tracked it down enough to know that the problem is a conflict with the Toptools for Servers Agents on the system. Removal of them stopped the errors, however, we need toptools agents for monitoring purposes.

Any more suggestions?

Do you have a top tools card in the server as well? If not you can also install Instant Top Tools which doesn't install any agents. It still allows you to monitor the system and Hardware Event Log remotely. Instant Top Tools is available at the same link that Theo Pointed to in the previous Post.

I was back a minor revision on the Toptools agents. I was on version 5.50 instead of the latest 5.51.
I did an uninstall, reboot, and install of the new agents.
The same problem exists.

The system does have a Toptools card in it but we wanted to focus on using it for remote control/restart and using the agents for alerting, especially since they have access through DMI to more information. Also, you need the agents to detect ASR if I remember correctly.

I think these errors are related to the scsi detail agent and hard drives with the firmware D84D and P84D. Would you check the firmware of your hard drives to see if these come up? From the controller view in FAST, right click a drive and select properties. The firmware is the last 4 digits of the product line. If you do have either of these firmwares, they should be updated to D94N and P94N.

One other thing you can do is uninstall the scsi detail agent to see if that is what is causing the conflict. To do so, do the agents setup from the programs menu. Do a custom install, and when you get to the list of agents to install, deselect the scsi detail agent. Continue with the install, reboot, then check to see if the errors go away.

I checked the version on my drives and it nothing near what you gave. They must be different drive types.

I was able to get them to stop though by excluding the HP Netraid 4M, HP Netraid, SCSI Detail, and SCSI (other one) agents when doing the HP Toptools Agent install.

This is not ideal in that we can't be notified via Toptools for Servers when drive issues occur, however, FAST does put error events in the NT event log so our monitoring with NetIQ Appmanager can pick them up. Alternatively, we can use the FAST email notification too.

As far as I know, it occurs only on a LP2000R with a single Netraid 4M running a mirrored system drive.
We have alot of other systems with Netraid 4Ms (but usually use the onboard Netraid for system drives) without the problem.
