LC2000 HP Hot Swap Drives

I want to upgrade my 9Gb hot-swap drives on the LC2000 with some 36 or 72Gb drives.
I am having trouble getting 36Gb hot swap drives.
Can I buy 36Gb seagate drives and inserting them into the 9Gb hot-swap carriers.
The connectors all seem to match and the cost to do this is very attractive.

Yes, you can.

Re: LC2000 HP Hot Swap Drives

You may be able to do it, but should you??

One, you might consider whether or not putting the drives in an HP drive tray might void the warranty on the drives.

Second, HP certainly will not support this solution. It won't void the warranty on the server, but HP will not honor the server's warranty related to the drives and probably even on the drive cage with 3rd party drives inserted into HP drive trays. So, if you encounter any problems with any portion of the drives' SCSI chain, the first thing Tech Support will ask you to do is to remove those drives and replace them with HP drives.

And, all of this depends on what kind Seagate drives you have. Are they "hotswap" drives with 80-pin SCA connectors on the back? If they have standard "common tray" 68 pin connectors, it most definitely will NOT work!

And, are the connectors long enough to form a solid connection with the connectors on the drive cage backplane??

I used to work Tech Support on HP NetServer and I once had a call where someone was attempting to do what you are trying to do and it didn't work because the connectors simply didn't connect. However, I think that was an LP2000, so I don't know if you will encounter the same problems that user did since the drives and drive trays are completely different on those two systems.

But, you should be aware that even though the Seagate drives may be less expensive in the short run, they may end up being more expensive in the long run because they might cause more problems than they resolve.

Re: LC2000 HP Hot Swap Drives

I would avoid using a third party drive as a boot volume, since HP would not support it, and there may be issues with firmware (not sure about the last one.) There is a part (D3349B) that is specifically designed for a third party drive. I would recommend going that route, rather than taking apart the 9GB Drives, since they are probably still worth at least a little money.

Same reply as before! They use the same bays - the two servers have a different backplance but I've some going out to a customer tonight I can test in an LC2000 just to made sure if you like?

If you want 3rd party one's I've just upgraded a customer with these

ST336753LC SEA C'TAH 15K.3 36GB U320 80P 8MB 4.7MS
ST373453LC SEA C'TAH 15K.3 73GB U320 80P 8MB 4.7MS

We just swapped the mechs over - obviously not suppported by hp but will save you some money and frankly the server is that old I don't supposed hp mtc is an issue. Ours actually went into a D6106A caddy and in an LH6000. I tried to get proper hp one first but I couldn't find any either new or 2nd user.
