LH3 Processor Upgrade

Hi,

I finally decided to upgrade one of my lh3 servers...
Among other things (additional power source,memory,disks...) I decided to take out the PII 450 Mhz cpu and install two PIII 550 Mhz... That's where the problems started.
When the machine booted there was an error:
0B01-0A: Missing Microcode Update data block for Pentium II CPU.

The error continued to appear even after the bios update (4.06.43 PL).

eventough, I decided to change the Windows 2000 support for multiprocessor: MPS Multiprocessor PC, and guess what? After rebooting, Windows just froze on startup. I managed to repair the windows instalation, but I am unable to have the two CPU's working...

Two things:
- The error does not appear with only one PIII 550 Mhz installed...
- I tried to run the advanced HP diagnostics, (after the normal one reported everything ok) and it freezes when starting multiprocessor tests....

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade

I am assuming you flashed the BIOS with the PII processor in. The update should have fixed it. I would try clearing the CMOS on the system. And then try flashing it again.

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade

I once saw an "experienced" tech forget to install the second Voltage Regulator Module when adding a second CPU and it gave all kinds of weird errors at startup.
(If you buy CPUs from open market sources, they may not always come with the VRM at all.)

Re: LH3 Processor Upgrade

Thanks Guys, but I managed to solve the problem yesterday... This is what happened:

- I took the main board out, took the PII CPU and installed the two PIII CPU, (including the second VRM module) which were bought directly at HP and, by the way, were too expensive for PIII 550 Mhz...

- I then flashed the BIOS (without the PII CPU).

The error continued to appear, so, in despair, yesterday, I decided to try it out with just one PIII CPU (I actually had to go to the trash can to get the CPU terminator, thank god the maid doesn't work on Sunday?s). And guess what? The error was gone... I then installed the second CPU and the error was still gone... I changed windows to "MPS Multiprocessor Computer" and everything was OK....

Thanks
