Max. HDD capacity - E45

Hello Members!
I have to upgrade an E45'er Server with a second bigger harddisk.
There is on 4GB installed. A new one should solve capacity problems.
What's the max. size of a HDD for the E45?

May I use U160-SCSI-Disks?
What about adapters for the cables?

All I can say is WHY?? In regards to the U160 hdd, the controller is only a 2910 20MB/sec rate-> you would be best to buy an old supported hdd from ebay or http://www.pmount.com The server was originally tested w/ 2,4 and 9GB hdds. The pn on the old 9gb hdd was D4911A and the pn# on the 4g was D4910A. I see that pmount has some of the d4910a.

The "WHY??" he stated, he wants more capacity not 4 GB, in this day and age you can not get the OS in that.

The controller should have no problems with an extra capacity drive.

Why U160 or U320, because that is what a new drive will be, this issue and question had nothing to do with transfer rates, just if he can "use U160".
Sorry Alex, I should be talking to you. Yes by all means use the latest model drive you can get. They are cheaper and use much less power. Some of the new U320 they have cut the power comsumption in half. Seagate has stopped production of 18 GB 10K RPM drives but 15K are available in their 15K.3 spec. We feel the 36GB drives are the best deal. But of course you are limited to the transfer rates of the E45's controller.

I see that your Netserver was fitted with 68 to 50 pin SCSI cables. Here is a link to HPs parts page for your server and it lists a fair amount of cabling, you will need to mate to a 68 pin SCSI on the drive. Take a look at what you have and what you need. a 68pin to 68pin you can get anywhere.

The "Why" was in regards to putting money into an old E45. I don't work for pmount, they just sell old HP products. I think he'll have problems with a U160 hdd on a wide controller.

It certainly won't be a tested or supported hard drive.

Hello!
The server works for a small workgroup of 6 users. So its speed is allways fast enough.
We want to upgrade it with a new HDD becuase the old one is just simply full!
In about 1 year we want to buy a new server and use the new HDD in it.
But please answer one last question.
You told me that I can use U160-disks. OK. But how what kind of capacity? Does the E45-controller works with 36GB? Or should I use 18GB?

I don't want to buy a 36GB disk, while the controller sees only 18GB or what ever.
I just remember to the problems with old mainboards and those 8GB or even 512MB HDD restrictions.

Yes, a 36GB should be fine on that Adaptec controller. We have customers with LC3s that use up to 186GB drives
