Mega Problem

I have just purcased a LH3, I then purcased an upgrade to make this unit a LH6000. The upgrade (D8597A) was advertised to work with 400 MHz thru 700 MHz XEON chips. But there are no dip switch settings for anything below 550 MHz. I have 6 500 MHz XEON chips with 2 MB cach. Will they work in this system? and if so how, and if not, why. Also what V.R.M.'s will work in this unit? I've seen different ones on ebay , saying they will work with many types of servers. I basicly want to turn this system into a workstation. Any help would be great.

Re: Mega Problem

According to my information the D8597A PN is a netserver keyboard. Are you sure this is the correct number ?
To find information about your upgrade have a look at the lh3 section of this site at http://netserver.hp.com/support/documents.asp?pid=LH3

Good luck,

Re: Mega Problem

What came with this upgrade besides the processors? The LH3 and LH6000 are obviously similar boxes on the outside, but far from it on the inside. The LH6000 system board supports Xeon 550 MHz, 700 MHz or 900 MHz with 512kb,1mb or 2mb L2 cache. There is not an upgrade available through HP to do this. I would get your money back.

Re: Mega Problem

The real part number is D9121A . It comes with 550 MHz 512. There's another upgrade that comes with 1 MB cache I don't know the part number off hand. I know it's not supposed to work, I don't have much in this system, I was mislead, yes The upgrade doesn't support the 500 MHz chips. That sucks because I didn't purcase the CPU's from the idiot that sold me the bare bone ugrade. But it did start me to thinking of " Why wouldn't it work ?" I am sending you the data sheet on the Xeon chips I have, also included is a link That state 500 MHz and the 550 MHz chips were both meant for 2, 4, and 8 way servers at the time of there introduction. There's no mention of 6 way servers tho. I guess with after market V.R.M.'s capable of selecting the clock speed by the serial number on the chip, brand name VSI I think) and some creative DIP switch settings, voltage meter on dip switch record resistence on all settings(no power on unit) use 1 increment lower from 550MHz setting. and maybe adjusting the bios for a x5 multi instead of x5.5 (I don't know)that's default for the 550 MHz cpu.(so I read on some chart at Intel) I beleive adjusting the system board to the CPU might work. What do you guys think?

Re: Mega Problem

You still didn't answer important questions. The part number you give is an upgrade from an LH3000 to and LH6000, not an LH3. Still big difference here. What came with the kit? If it was just a system board, then that won't do it. It would have to require all 3 boards in the system to be replaced. The LH6000 boards won't work with 500MHz XEON processors. Just because it is just below what the LH6000 supports, doesn't mean it has to work. The boards are not designed to use less than 550MHz XEON processors.

Re: Mega Problem

This is impossible. I work with a reseller, we do upgrades and such on a daily basis, you can upgrade an LH3 to an LH4 or an LH 3000, to an LH 6000 but no way from LH3 to LH6000.. the chassis mounts for the motherboard, power supplies, etc are completly different. I wold imagine you didn't purchase this through HP. I am sorry for your trouble, however there is nothing you can do, aside from upgrading from LH3 to an LH4 which with the appropriate BIOS update wll run Quad 800mhz xeons.
