NetServer CPU Upgrades

Can retail intel CPUs (non-HP branded) be used for NetServer upgrades? I'm assuming I just need to have the appropriate HP VRM for the motherboard. Are HP's intel CPUs any different than the generic production CPUs?

Re: NetServer CPU Upgrades

hi, the CPU are genuine intel processor, so you can add you non HP processor, but you need to know that in this case you are the only responsible for the Server, you need to be sure that the processor math the one inserted ( FSB, Cache, freq...)
If you have a problem with your server, HP will ask you to remove the part added before to trubleshoot the problem, and the will not replace it if needed.
So I suggest you to do something like that only if you have an older server out of warranty or contract.

Re: NetServer CPU Upgrades

Just be sure the CPU is the exact same type. Example: Pentium Pro 200, 512k cache, Step 9.
I put a step 7 with a step 9 on my extra CPU motherboard and ... no boot up! Your chip supplier can tell you what it is. Try Marathon Technology on Ebay.
