netserver LC3 - ide ports?

We have an LC3 at one of our offices as a proxy server, its currently running scsi drives 2x2 mirroring, however I would like to take and add just a plain 40gig ide drive for cached data. I do not have access to the documentation, and apparently the manual on HP's site is unavailable as well.

Does the LC3 have an IDE port that would supprt a 20-40gig ide drive, as im not sure whether the cdrom is on a scsi bus either.

The CD-Rom is a IDE device. There is only one IDE connector on the backplane so you would be sharing the same controller with a hard drive and CD-ROM which is usually bad news. IDE hard drives are not supported on the LC3 and would be at your own risk.

One of the nastiest problems you will run in to is the dominance of the IDE bus on any given system.

If you stick an IDE HDD in there, it will want to be the bootable device (unless you can tell it to boot off the SCSI drive).

What OS are you running on the machine currently?

hi guys, thanks for the replies.

The system is running nt4 server, its established as a member server on the domain.

If there is only one ide port in it, and that is currently connecting to the cd-rom, then it really is not worth wrestling with. I figured it would be a simple solution to adding more, unfrequently accessed harddrive space, for a quarter of the cost of another scsi drive, when it reality the cost is not really justified in this case - however given the fact that it seems to be the only viable option, i may not have a choice.

Again, since i did not have access to the resources i thought I would ask here, glad i did.

We have old LC3, OS - NT4 (SP6).
2 years ago, I removed IDE CD-ROM drive and added 2 IDE HDD drives(8GB everyone) as experiment for increase of speed of a disk subsystem, then LC3 was used as database server.
Has established Intel UltraATA Storage driver since then any problems with IDE HDD is not present.
By the way, they work even faster than SCSI (on mine).

We have a LC3 and it says in the bios that it will only accept 8GB drives. How did you get bigger ones to work? Did you hve to update your bios? We are on 4.06.23PQ what version do you have?

Hi Corey.

Yes, I have been succesful in installing a 40 gig hard disk in my LC3. I use mine as a server at home, and is currently configured with 2x 4.2 SCSI, SCSI Dat Drive, and a CDRW as Master IDE and 40gig HD as Slave IDE.

Operating system is Windows XP Professional.

I have had no problems with it.

There is an issue with the BIOS not recognising the drive size correctly, but using the disk management util in Windows to set up the drive will solve any problems.... Windows recognised the HD size correctly.
