Netserver lpr CPU upgrade problem

I am trying to upgrade a Netserver lpr 550 to 850. I purchased two P3-850E (100FSB) CPU's and the correct VRM's for the processors (VRM's from HP Parts). I only use this server for testing, so I didn't want the expense of real HP CPU upgrade kits!

When I install the CPU's, the server POST shows PIII-850E processors ok, but then displays a message stating that the processors are not compatible with the server.

Since HP has an lpr 850 model, why would 850's not be compatible?

How can I get the server to work with the P3-850E's?

Thank you.

Re: Netserver lpr CPU upgrade problem

The system board for the 550MHz system is different than one used on the 800MHz porc. You will need to get the new system board. Also, are these CPU's also purchased from HP? If not, this may cause problems.

Re: Netserver lpr CPU upgrade problem

Pentium III 550 MHz, 512 kb cache is the maximum CPU speed supported if you have a 400 MHz (=old type motherboard) LPr Netserver.

Re: Netserver lpr CPU upgrade problem

The LPr has 2 different mother boards, 1 supports up to a 550Mhz processor, the 2nd (newer) board supports a 600Mhz - 850Mhz proc.

One issue in upgrading the Proc on an HP NetServer is to upgrade the bios to the latest revision, BEFORE replacing the processors. This way you make sure that the BIOS will support the processor upgrade. Otherwise you might see a microcode missing error on POST.

Re: Netserver lpr CPU upgrade problem

Darryl or Anyone else,

I have a similiar situation and am in need of guidance/help also. I have a HP NetServer LPr PIII600 (D9348a) and the CPU frequency sticker on the motherboard says it supports upto 800 w/ 100MHz FSB. One of the 600MHz CPUs stopped working and I purchased two PIII-800MHz Slot1 (same step) to replace both processors, did not purchase the replacement CPUs from HP. After updating the BIOS from 4.06.32 to 4.06.35 and changing the proper switches for the CPU frequency I get nothing when I power the system on with the PIII-800 CPUs in the system. Nothing shows on the display, no odd beeps, and the DIMM LEDs on the motherboard do nothing. Is there something else I'm missing?

Re: Netserver lpr CPU upgrade problem

ok - Unfortunately....
I bought a slew (8) of 800/256/100 PIII's and NOW I am researching this.

I *THOUGHT* that since there were switches on the motherboard that CLEARLY STATED support from 500 - 800 MHZ simply by changing the switches that I could upgrade our single 550MHz LPR's into DUAL 800's.

If this is not the case... why would these switches be on the motherboard?
