New Hard Disks for Compaq Hard Disk Array

Hi,

I am trying to find out if my Compaq Disk Arrays are capable of holding 146GB SCSI Hard Disks.

I can't see any model number on them but they can hold 14 disks and are 3U high. They currently have 36.4 10K SCSI disks in them.

I have the serial numbers if anybody can match them to a model to find out if 146GB disks will be supported:
8A09FLY1103V and 8A09FLY11045

Thanks

Mario:

It is very likely that you should be able to use the new disks.

What model is the SmartArray controller in your server?

Enjoy!

7 HDD x 2, you can use any drives as 10k, 15K / U3 U320 / ... 146GB
With 5th and 6th Generation controllers.

KOV what did you mean by 7 HDD x 2?

I have an embedded Smart Array Controller in one server (DL580) and a Smart Array 5300 Controller in the other server (DL580). These can be upgraded if needed.

Re: New Hard Disks for Compaq Hard Disk Array

I thought that just in case if you have 5300 (which you are) with simplex if you pick HDD 300GB you might run over difficulty creating logical drive, seems you will be fine with duplex 2 x 7HDD.

Re: New Hard Disks for Compaq Hard Disk Array

Mario:

Yes; you can use the 146GB disks on the SA5300 controller without problems. You will not see the Ultra320 protocol, but they will show up as 146GB.

As KOV said, you do not want to bind to many of these together and go over the volume size threshold or your O/S thresholds.

Your Disk Enclosure is likely a 4200 or 4300 series:

Re: New Hard Disks for Compaq Hard Disk Array

Would I need to upgrade the server (DL580) with the embedded smart array controller?

Re: New Hard Disks for Compaq Hard Disk Array

If it's DL580 G1 stay with 530X / (256MB cache if possibly)
If DL580 G2 640X would be recommended with 4354 Enclosure
