Trouble installing any OS on NetServer LX Pro

I have read throught the other forum messages and none of them seem to be helping me.

I am unable to get an OS loaded on my NetServer. I do not have the Original HP CD.

I have configured the Raid several times, many different ways. The OS install hangs as soon as it begins. With Redhat is hangs with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. On Windows 2K it hangs with the message "Setup is inspecting your computer's harware configuration..."

The machine sees the logical drives, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Trouble installing any OS on NetServer LX Pro

Hi Eric,

This is a know issue when trying to install from the CD running off of the adaptec SCSI controller. (This is for Win 2K)

To get around this, do a fresh Windows 2000 installation using the Setup disks. it takes a bit longer but gets you past the error.

Re: Trouble installing any OS on NetServer LX Pro

It seems to be an issue with the NetRaid card(D4943), when I remove the card, the install runs fine, but then there are no hard drives of course... I have upgraded to the lastest firmware on the NetRaid card A.04.03

Re: Trouble installing any OS on NetServer LX Pro

Hi, I pulled this from a document online. I Hope this helps.

HP Netserver - System Hangs Booting to Windows 2000 CD
ISSUE:

If the HP Netserver system contains an Adaptec SCSI controller (depending upon how the controller is configured) the system can hang if you attempt to boot from the Windows 2000 CD. The hang is usually encountered within 30 seconds after the start of the boot process.

The message that is displayed on the screen is Set up is inspecting your computerâ s hardware configuration.

The HP Netervers LXPro, LX, and LXe system will hang during Windows 2000 installation if you attempt to boot from the Windows 2000 CD and if any Adaptec SCSI controller (including the systemâ s embedded SCSI controller) is configured as the first bootable device on the PCI bus. Furthermore, there must be an additional storage controller configured to boot in sequence after the Adaptec SCSI controller.

The HP Netservers LH Pro, LD Pro, and LH II system will hang during Windows 2000 installation if you attempt to boot from the Windows 2000 CD and if any Adaptec SCSI controller (including the systemâ s embedded SCSI controller) is configured as the first bootable device on the PCI bus, and it is connected only to a CD ROM drive. Furthermore, there must be an additional storage controller configured to boot in sequence after the Adaptec SCSI controller.

NOTE: The boot order is: slot 1, slot 2, slot 3, slot 4, embedded SCSI A, embedded SCSI B, slot 5 and slot 6.On NetRAID only: Disable the boot priority on the embedded SCSI via ECU. The HP NetRAID adapter must be placed in slots 1, 2, 3 or 4.

SOLUTION:

Install Windows 2000 using Windows 2000 setup diskettes.

Creating setup diskettes

Four blank formatted diskettes are needed. Label them as listed below:
Windows 2000 setup boot
Windows 2000 setup disk #2
Windows 2000 Setup disk #3
Windows 2000 setup disk #4

Place the Windows 2000 CD on a system running Windows NT or Windows 95.
Open a command prompt and change to the d:\bootdisk directory (assuming that D: is your CD-ROM drive).
At the command prompt type:
makebt a: (If using a DOS or Win 9X system) makebt32 a: (If using an NT system)

Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the utility.

Starting the installation Windows 2000 using setup diskettes

Boot from the Windows 2000 setup boot diskette.
Follow the instructions displayed, replacing diskettes as necessary.
Install HP drivers when prompted.

CAUSE:

There is a conflict with the Windows 2000 CD and the secondary boot device. Reason is unknown.

OR, you can try this:

To install Windows 2000 to a hard disk device attached to a HP NetRAID device:
--Fresh Windows 2000 installation:

Disable boot priority on embedded SCSI via ECU. The HP NetRAID adapter must be placed in slots 1, 2,

Re: Trouble installing any OS on NetServer LX Pro

Eric,

Server 2000 was never certified to run on the original netraid classic. I know some people were able to install 2000 on a netraid classic card like you have using a third party driver. HP did not supply a driver for 2000, only NT.

Please look at this post I responded on over a year ago. http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/parseCurl.do?CURL=%2Fcm%2FQuestionAnswer%2F1%2C%2C0xc2703fd7f72ad611abd50090277a778c%2C00.html&admit=716493758+1066321170281+28353475

Also, when you were configuring your array on the netraid card, did you initialize the array?

Ciao,
Greg

Re: Trouble installing any OS on NetServer LX Pro

Actually I was trying to install Linux on it.

But in any event, I got it to work. It was the location of the the Netraid card. I moved it from slot 5 to slot 2 and then everything worked perfectly.

Thanks for the help.
