Xeon 700 on LH4

Hello,

i'am running a lh4r with 4GB ram and three 550 MHz XEON 2MB cache. Everything runs fine. But now I want to replace the CPU with 700 Mhz ones.
What VRM are needed and what Voltage the CPU's are running with.

Thanks for Help

Re: Xeon 700 on LH4

Hi Hans-Juergen,

If you're upgrading an LH4 from 550 MHz to 700 MHz Xeon CPU's you need a new CMC chip on the systemboard to make it capable of running the 700 MHz CPU's.
The productnumber of this kit is P1764A. I don't think it is available anymore since the LH4 is out of production for many years.

Without this kit you cannot run 700 MHz in your LH4.

When you install the kit you have to remove the 2 Cache VRM's 1/2 and 3/4 from the system board.

Re: Xeon 700 on LH4

Hello,

This has not been the question. I already replaced the system and i/o board with one from a 700 MHz lh4.
The question is what kind of VRM is needed. The xeon 700 are available as 12v/5v or as 2.8 V variants. The xeon 550 installed needs 2.0 V. This lets me think that the vrm for xeon 550 are not usable anymore.

That there may be any other sorts of problems is not the question.

Re: Xeon 700 on LH4

hi,

in answer to your question, only one vrm was ever produced for the lh4's.

They just use the same ones for all the speed processors. They will probably have the part number 0950-2827 on them but the new part number is D6021-63046. These have 8.4volt on them if I remember correctly. The cpu terminator boards are also the same.

Re: Xeon 700 on LH4

While he is correct about the VRM's (the 700 does not need the CPU cache VRMs it has it's own built in), this does not answer your question of which XEON 700 can you use.
The HP Part number was P1229A. I used a special Heat sink that was designed for the CPU housing. HP told us years ago this "Only 700-MHz CPUs with A0 or A1 stepping can be installed in an HP Netserver LH4. The HP Netserver LH4 BIOS does not contain microcode to support CPUs with B0 stepping."
This is a sl49p <= sSpec Number
