100VG-Any LAN adapter

100VG-Any LAN adapter

Hello,

We have clustered systems using ServiceGuard. All systems have two networkinterfaces, one built-in (probably 100Base-T LAN adapter) and one 100VG-Any LAN adapter.

After we replaced our hubs with 100Mb/s hubs, we weren't able to use the 100VG-Any LAN adapter on 100Mb/s.

We noticed also that when unplugging the cable from the primary network interface (the built-in) the failover to the stanby interface didn't work.

The first thing i checked is the installed software.

On all systems we have the following SW-Bundles:
J2695AA_APS (B.10.00.02 100VG-AnyLAN/9000 EISA)
XSW800GR1020 (B.10.20.46 General release patches for HP-UX 10.20 servers - September 1999)
XSW800HWCR1020 (B.10.20.46 Hardware Enablement and Critical Patches for HP-UX 10.20 servers - Sept. 1999)

Is there someone who knows these problems. Are there patches that can solve our problems and which we can install and test without interupting the high-availability of the cluster ?
Or do we have to use a newer version of 100VG-AnyLAN software ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 100VG-Any LAN adapter

Hi there!
100VG-Any LAN adapters will only run 100 MB when connected to a 100VG ANY Lan switch. If they are connected to anything else, they will only run 10MB. I would suggest an upgrade to HSC or PCI if possible. If this is K or D Class, HSC is your only option, since the EISA for the D is also being phased out.

Re: 100VG-Any LAN adapter

Hi Berlene,
We won't seek a solution for speeding up the connection for the 100VG-AnyLAN adapter anymore. It isn't so bad at all to have a failovering to an 10Mb stanby lan.
But, i have been told that the stanby-lan didn't work at all. Strangely, with lanscan i can see that the HW-state and the NI-state of both lan adapters are "UP".
I expected that for the stanby lan (100VG-AnyLAN adapter) the HW-state would be "UP" and the NI-state would be "DOWN".

Or can it be a ServiceGuard problem ?
Maybe doesn't the failover work because of a misconfiguration or a missing patch for Service Guard ?

For ServiceGuard we have the following installed:
B3935BA A.10.10 MC/ServiceGuard
B3936AA A.10.03 MC/ServiceGuard

Re: 100VG-Any LAN adapter

We have a similar setup with a 100VG/AnyLAN as the redundant LAN and the built-in LAN as the primary. I don't think we had to load any patches to get it to work.

It's been a while since we tested it, but I do remember it working, though. On ours, the hardware state is up, but the Net-Interface State is down.

I've also used a gigabit Ethernet card as a primary and a 10Base-T interface as a secondary, so I know the different drivers shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck.
