11.i 35-bit to 64-bit

Our environment cosists of 7 HP-UX 11.i systems running on 7410's and 5450's. The OS was installed at 32-bit and now it has been decided that we need to be running at 64-bit. As far as I can tell there is no way to do this without actually upgrading from one version of the OS to a higher version. Is there a way to just uprgade from 32-bit to 64-bit and stay at the same OS level?

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Your best bet is to fresh install 11.i 64bit. Ugrading is not always clean.

Yes, on the Installation CD, there is an option to 'Upgrade' but that simply means switching from 32-bit to the 64-bit version of HPUX 11.11. The upgrade does work but if you build the original OS with default sizes for / and /stand, you may be cramped for space. Consult your 'Installation and Update Guide'; it will step you through the process.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: 11.i 35-bit to 64-bit

Chris,

I thought maybe you'd found a new option to the OS. ;^)

Anyway, take a look at these threads, they should point you in the right direction:

I'll have to post the other when I can get it to open.

Re: 11.i 35-bit to 64-bit

Hi Chris:

Updating from 32-to-64-bitness is supported with the 'update-ux' tool. See here for more information:

Thanks for the advice everybody. It's good to know that the upgrade should work pretty easily.

Re: 11.i 35-bit to 64-bit

Your real issue isn't with HP-UX.

It's with third party applications.

Cyborg's HR system for example has not been fully tested or certified on HP-UX 11.11 64 bit.

The 1.x version of Oracle's Internet applicatoin server has to be re-installed and is a 32 bit app that is certified to run in 32 bit mode on 64 bit OS.

There are major issues migrating an Oracle repository database from 32 bit to 64 bit even if there is no change in database version number.

Also, you can't run oracle products properly when trying to take level 2 ignite images. That changes the /etc/group file and breaks sqlplus while the golden image is being compiled.

I could write a book, but make sure your 32 bit apps are certified.

Lastly, the mirgration process, which I went to class for, is not as reliable as a cold install of the new OS. Among 17 systems administrators in my June 2002 class, none of them seriously considered in place upgrade after the class, which was in Atlanta.

Steve

Re: 11.i 35-bit to 64-bit

Um, unless someone did something clever at install time, you syhould already be running a 64-bit flavor of the kernel. On systems with PA-8500 and later CPUs, only the 64-bit flavors of 11 and 11i kernel are supported.

The rp7410 and rp5450 (the rp's at the front are kind of important now that we have rx's and zx's and other types of products also with four digit names.) have CPUs that are later than the PA-8500, so the install media should have only allowed the 64-bit version to be installed in the first place.
