11.i V2 on K570

Has anyone sucessfully installed 11.i V2 on a K570. We are in need of upgrading our test server (to do more testing), but were deaply saddened to find the K classes under Retired Hardware. We are currently running 11.i V1 without any problems.

Thanks

Re: 11.i V2 on K570

Scott,

Forgive my feeble old mind if I end up chiming in on this (again, that is).

Though the K-class is officialy unsupported as a platform for v2, there is significant precedent that it just might work. In that past, I've done similar things like installing 11i on 715 workstations and Patrick has installed v2 on a C-class workstation.

Have you tried yet, or are you trying to find further guidance?

Well from the Updating and Installing 11iV2 September 2004

Release manual page on Unsupported Servers
http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-8144/ch02s04.html

PA-RISC Servers.

All 32-bit servers (including 32-bit A-Class servers A180 and A180C)

All D-Class servers

All R-Class servers

All E-Class servers

All K-Class servers

All T-Class servers

All V-Class servers

You could of course try installing it, but if you have problems......

Re: 11.i V2 on K570

I have looked at the supported and unsupported servers, but I also know that just because some things are not "officially" supported, that sometimes they still work.

We have not tried this yet but we are looking very strongly at the possibility.

Re: 11.i V2 on K570

Scott,

As I mentioned, I've seen and heard of similar "unsupported but it works" situations. Even if you need to be able to fall back to 11i v1 if this doesn't work, that should be as simple as recovering with an Ignite make_tape_recovery tape. Make two Ignite tapes before you start so you'll be sure you have one readable one if you need to fall back. Then go ahead and give it a try.

That is what we will probably do... I'll leave this open to see if anyone else wants to chime in on it.

Thanks!

Hi Scott,

You probably know already, but the *very* first thing you should do is upgrade the firmware on that K570 - here's a link to 42.01 the latest:

Re: 11.i V2 on K570

K570 is 64 bit.

Therefore it should run though its not supported.

Make sure you have lots of memory, the already mentioned firmware issues resolved, and certain interface cards will simply not be picked up in 64 bit mode.

Re: 11.i V2 on K570

It could be a real bummer if you have some sort of testing crunch and then run into a problem with 11iv2 on the K that will not be resolved because the hardware is unsupported.

Also, since the K Class hardware is unsupported, you need to presume that none of the production/customer systems (not sure if your testing is in-house or if you are a software supplier) will have a matching configuration - none of the supported systems have the same IO infrastructure for example - no HP-PB, I suspect no HSC/GSC, and I don't know that any of the "supported" systems will have the PA-8200 or PA-8000 CPU in them.

So, your test system will not be terribly representative.

The K's were indeed good machines, and served in good stead for quite some time. They deserve a well-earned retirement :) If $ is an issue and you cannot get something from the curent CPL - say an rp4440 if you need to stay with PA-RISC, or an rx4640 if you can go to IPF - I suspect that there are any number of older "supported" systems out there on the used market. I would though try to go with as "new" an old system as you can find and afford.
