11i, rlogin and ipv6
This isn't a questions so I'm not concerned with the points issue. This is just an informational post since I had the problem and didn't find anything in the forums, I figure maybe no-one has run across this yet.
I am running 11i on a B2000 I'm not sure why I install IPv6 but I did. It's been a while since I installed it and this is the only one at our site so I can't remember if I was asked during the install or not. Anyway, recently I've noticed that my rlogin capability has been degrading. It was working fine for all servers but I noticed over a period of time I was not able to resolve names. I checked all the usual things but I didn't find anything. It was only a few servers to begin with so it wasn't that big of a deal. The error I got back when using rlogin was "rcmd_af:: Unknown host". I recently installed the newest Quality pack for 11i and was unable to rlogin to almost all my servers. Again, I ran the gambit of the usual solutions with nsswitch.conf and resolv.conf and host files and such. What confused me was that I could perform a nslookup with no problem both forward and backward IP resolution. I ended up calling HP support. They had me check a few patches (PHNE_24131, PHNE_24132) which were installed. They also suggested I install a new patch (PHCO_27434) which I did with no noticable change in operation. The front line engineer was very helpful but it was clearly beyond his capability so he politely handed me off to the backend. The first thing the backend engineer did was ask me to run the following command "ls /dev/ip*" this returned 2 files ip and ip6. I think this confirmed that I indeed had installed IPv6. We then checked the /etc/nsswitch.conf file and he asked me to add an entry "ipnodes:". I just copied the "hosts:" line and changed hosts to ipnodes. Viola, it works. He explained a little about it but I was more intersted in getting it working than understanding the details of it. I probably should have listened so I could have put more information down (like this isn't long enough).
Maybe if someone knows and wants to add the "details" I'll do the points thing. I'm more interested in just sharing what I found out!
Glenn

Re: 11i, rlogin and ipv6
http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/T1306-90001.pdf (page 29) explains the details.
Name and Address lookup for IPv6
..."A new entity, ipnodes, specifies which name services resolve addresses and host names for the IPv6 Dual Stack." ...
There's more information there.
I found this link by going to:
