11i Upgrade / Space
OK, I have a question.
I have been doing successful upgrades from 11.0 > 11i, eventhough I prefer not to.
I have 11i installed on a 4Gbyte Dclass. But that was a cold install.
Can someone explain to me why the upgrade requires so much space. I had to cancel my upgrade this weekend due to the fact that the drives were on 9 Gbyte:
bdf | grep vg00
/dev/vg00/lvol3 143360 70529 68337 51% /
/dev/vg00/lvol1 107669 29817 67085 31% /stand
/dev/vg00/lvol8 1839104 1469555 346492 81% /var
/dev/vg00/lvol7 1060864 658352 377387 64% /usr
/dev/vg00/lvol4 843776 1449 789740 0% /tmp
/dev/vg00/lvol6 2265088 1086246 1105381 50% /opt
/dev/vg00/lvol5 1572864 1169906 377823 76% /home
I cleared up enough space in /opt, but the install was complaining about not enough in /usr and /var. I was able to get space free in var. I had to ignite the box twice. Ended up I couldn't get enough space for /usr so I bagged the upgrade.
I tried using '-x enforce_dsa=false' but the upgrade just ignored it and kept complaining about space.
How can I have it cold installed on a 4gbyte drive, but can't fit it on a 9 gbyte doing an upgrade?

Re: 11i Upgrade / Space
Hi,
Check this upgradation doc.
http://docs.hp.com/en/5969-4378/5969-4378.pdf
Allthough not much experience regarding upgrades but still in my view it has to copy the whole OS filesets of new version to disk without removing older filesets, this is required to provide functionality like roll back.
HTH,

Re: 11i Upgrade / Space
Good question, Robert. The only thought that comes to my mind is that, during the upgrade process, you've got most of your 11.0 system co-existing with your new 11i system. Once you complete the upgrade, the 11.0 stuff goes away, but during the process you could end up using as much as twice the space.

Re: 11i Upgrade / Space
Hi Robert,
I recently went thru the docs to upgrade to Dec 2004.
Doc very cleary states the disk space requirements.
For FOE
/ 208MB
/stand 204MB
/var 4.5GB
/usr 2.6GB
/tmp 208MB
/opt 3.6GB
