I recently came into a couple of 712/60 and 712/80 workstations. I have worked with solaris for a few years now, but have no HP experience. The person who gave these WS to me, got them at a goverment auction and knows nothing about them. According to the excess tags the HD's were wipe and an OS was reinstalled. They boot fine to the login screen but I do not know what user name and password to use. Is there a way to bypass this problem so I can edit the user files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
Hi Robert,
These are old guys and I'm working from memory but here goes.
If you are very lucky and a kind soul installed the OS, the login will be 'root' and the password will simply be.
Plan B is to boot single-user and change the root passwd.
Now the answer to this depends upon the OS that was loaded.
When you boot the machine, I think you will see
something like 'Press to interrupt boot'.
During boot, press several times and after a while you should get some sort of prompt.
If you are running a pre 10.X version of HP-UX
the boot string is something close to this:
hpux -is (;0)/hpux or hpux (;0)/hpux -is
if you are running 10.X or higher
hpux (;0)/stand/vmunix -is.
You can search the forums for single-user boot procedures foe your particular model and OS level.
In any any, when you get to single-user,
type /sbin/passwd root and enter the desired root password. You can then reboot and do any needed tasks. But again, I would try root & first - your chances are quite good.
This should get you started and welcome to UNIX, Clay

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: 712/60-80
Hello Robert,
Clay gave you pretty much all you need to get into the box.
Here are a few more info links for you:
You can go to www.docs.hp.com and you find all important information about HP-UX available there.
Using the search function here on the ITRC will give you access to a lot of docs as well on the desired topic.
Hope that gets you started a bit in understanding and enjoying HP-UX.
Good luck,
Steffi Jones

Re: 712/60-80
Robert,
Since you mentioned that you come from the Solaris world, you should be aware that there is a very handy HPUX <> Solaris Cookbook available from:
http://www.interex.org/tech/9000/Tech/sun_hpux_interop/index.html
I have found this very handy on many occasions!
