Re: a simple question: which one is my tape driver?
Do you have a tape that was used say about 1 month ago?
If so it is possible you can attempt to read it back? If it is not successful can you also try this on another system?
If the second machine reports that tape as being okay, and the first not, arrange to have the tape drive replaced.

Re: a simple question: which one is my tape driver?
First, use compression for in this case you've run out of room on the tape media and COMPRESSION needs to be used. To use COMPRESSION use: /dev/rmt/c0t3d0BEST.
Then use chsum on a restored file to verify it against the original.
tar -cvf /filesystem /dev/rmt/c0t3d0BEST
DO THIS:
mkdir /tmp/newdir
cd /tmp/newdir
mt -t /dev/rmt/0m rew
tar -xvf /dev/rmt/0mn "usr/bin/b*"
NOTE: " Omn " NO REWIND
NOTE: " usr..." NO /
THEN cksum /tmp/usr/bin/b*file
-with-
/usr/bin/b*file
They should be identical.
