A3312A and two servers

I've got a disk encloser A3312A, which has two columns of disks and is set up such that each column can have it's own cable to seperate SCSI interfaces.

I'm in transition between two servers and could really use some of the disks, but not all of them, on the new server.

In the end, when the old server is retired, all the disks will be on the new server.

Question - can I temporarily cable the first column of disks to a SCSI adapter on old server, and cable the second column of disks to a SCSI adapter on new server?

Would that be too wierd? This is temporary, while I move stuff between servers.

Re: A3312A and two servers

Hi Fred,

Absolutely.
We did this all the time when we ran these Jamaicas off our Ks.
Just be aware of the SCSI IDs for each slot.
There's DIP sws in the back where the IDs are assigned.
And remember to terminate the SCSI bus properly on each side.

Jeff

Re: A3312A and two servers

Yes that works. These are intentionally two separate buses unless physically cabled together.

Plan B. You could tie the buses together and still use them connected to two hosts but the trick here is that one on the controller must be set to 6 and the only termination is on the controllers themselves. This is typical of MC/ServiceGuard installations but you can use it in non-cluster configurations. Normally, a given disk in the JBOD is "owned" by only one host.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: A3312A and two servers

Thanks.

This would be a temporary arrangement, and it would all be over in a day. It happens that there are two full-height drives in the second column, and by a stroke of luck they have file systems on them but are unused and uncomplicated (no striping etc).

It occurred to me I could put them on the new server and configure them in advance of the other disks, giving me 36 GB of working disk space to aid in porting over the other stuff.
