A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

I have just installed a A7143A PCI card in a rp3410 server running hpux 11.11 with the latest HWE patch-bundle and the Bundled software RAID-01. The card is installed in Hardware slot: 0/3/1/0. After rebooting the card is not recognized, i.e. ioscan states that the card is "Unclaimed" and "Unknown"
Need help...

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

I'd hope there is just some driver needed that is not in Your current kernel. Unfortunately (for me :) I don't have the card so I can't tell for sure.

Look through the 'drivers' menu in SAM - is there anything fitting?
Otherwise, look into the manuals ;)

Lars,

Just in case that is what you need, the software is available from http://software.hp.com at:

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Thanks for the replies. I have verified that the ciss driver is in the kernel as well as installed and verified the software needed (RAID-01). I therefore hope that there is something else I have overlooked.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Hi,

I doubt the functioning of the card at this system as it is not appearing in the support matrix. Look at the link at page no. 46 of 172.

Just try it having install this if not done.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Howdy,
This matrix says it is supported...
http://www.hp.com/products1/serverconnectivity/storagesnf2/raid160/specifications/
Iirc the rp3440 has 3 pci/pci-x slots and the 3410 only has 2 but they share the same chassis? Is there a deliberate dead slot on the 3410 -may not be -just a thought?

Are there any further patches available?
Have you tried forcing the driver onto the hardware path with ioscan? Might be something to try if all else fails.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Thanks for all replies. I have already tried to force-bind the ciss driver to the card, using: "ioscan -M ciss -H 0/3/1/0" which binds the driver. The card still shows "UNCLAIMED" and "UNKNOWN" status, and refuses to get configured, i.e. devicefiles created etc. The rp3410 should be supported as per HP's Product Bulletin, and the card is seen, so the slot used (0/3/1/0) seems to be operational. I can also see the card off-line from ODE under ISL.
Still need help.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Hi again, adn thanks for your efforts and help. I would like to state again that the A7143A card is installed in a rp3410 (supported) at address 0/3/1/0 (which is slot 2 in the PCI-X card cage, also supported). I have the software downloaded, and installed from software.hp.com. I also have the driver: ciss in the running kernel. Latest HWE patches and it is STILL not working. The card is seen as "Unclaimed" and "Unknown" through ioscan and no devicefile is created. It has bound the driver, ciss, to the card and been given an instance number (2) so I would expect a devicefile: /dev/ciss2 being created but not as long as the card is "Unclaimed".
Still need help.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Ok, good You checked on 'dead slot' issues, I also got suspicious of that ;)

Another thing that came to my mind: This card is a relabeled Proliant SmartArray adapter, but maybe it doesn't just get relabeled but also changed in the pci id strings. You could try to verify the serial number with HP.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Thanks Florian, and the rest of you that has answered. I will check the serial numbers. Otherwise I will consider the card "DOA" and hope that a replacement card will fix the issue, unless someone has another hint to what might be the problem.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

It would be useful to check syslog to see if there are any errors at the time the ciss driver tries to access the card.

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Thanks for the input. Nothing in syslog that point to problems at that time.

Hi guys,

My name is Shokhat, I just need to find out if this issue has been resolved? If yes, what was the final resolution? I have a similar issue with an A7143A on an rp2450, the solution could possible apply.

Thanks and regards

Re: A7143A Unknown on rp3410 after installation

Hi, The problem was finally resolved. It was "simply" a faulty card (H/W failure). After recieving a new replacement card for testing, everything went ok.
Thanks to all.
