There are two methods:

# tar cvf myfile | gzip myfile

or

# tar cvf myfile
# gzip myfile

I just tried this and IT WORKS!

# tar -cf - ./dir_to_tar | gzip > filename.tar.gz

hi,

if you have GNU tar, that would be as easy as:

tar -cvzf yd.tar.gz ydfiles
