I should have read your question more closely, since I missed the part about relying on the increased visibility as motivation to the sysadmins to remember to add new PVs.

I think a better solution is to check for what you really want to check for-- that two hosts have the same disks imported and ready for use. This means scripting and tying it into your enterprise monitoring system.

(At least "strings /etc/lvmtab" is easy to parse...)
