Add a Hard Drive to HP Unix Server 11.0
I am seeing a hard disk as a part of a vol group (vg03) but does not show up as part of the logical volume(lvol1) on the volume group.
Can I add the disk to lovl1 without having to reboot the system?
This is a production system and there is data already on the disks that are part of lvol1.
Can I use SAM to do this?
Thank you all.

Re: Add a Hard Drive to HP Unix Server 11.0
Yes if lvol1 is part of vg03.
Could you post the output of "vgdisplay -v vg03"?

Re: Add a Hard Drive to HP Unix Server 11.0
This operation does not require a reboot assuming the disk is already installed. If its a hot swap for sure, no reboot required.
You can use sam, but should not.
ioscan
insf -C disk
insf -e
pvcreate
vgextend vg03
lvextend /dev/vg03/lvol1
umount the file system then: extendfs
or
fsadm -b

Re: Add a Hard Drive to HP Unix Server 11.0
If your /dev/vg03/lvol1 contains a filesystem, the next step after extending the LV is extending the filesystem. No reboot is needed, although you *may* have to stop the application on the LV and unmount the filesystem to run the extension.
If it contains something else (like a raw database), then some application-specific operations may be needed.
In HP-UX 11.00, the default filesystem type is VxFS. It can be extended while the filesystem is mounted, if you have the optional OnlineJFS product installed. If you have it, the command is:
fsadm -F vxfs -b
If you don't have OnlineJFS or the filesystem type is HFS, you must stop the application and unmount the LV. The command to extend the filesystem is "extendfs" in this case:
umount /dev/vg03/lvol1
extendfs /dev/vg03/rlvol1
mount /dev/vg03/lvol1
I don't remember if SAM can do on-line filesystem extensions, because I always do them on the command line. Sorry!

Re: Add a Hard Drive to HP Unix Server 11.0
First you need to check if the disk is installed on the system:
ioscan -funC disk
Second you need to add it to the vg03:
vgextend /dev/vg03 /dev/dsk/c1t4d0
Then you need to increase you logical volume:
lvextend -L 400 /dev/vg06/lvol3
Then if you have on-line JFS:
swlist | grep -i jfs
You need to extend your FS:
fsadm -F hfs -o largefiles -b 400M /mount_point
If you do not have on-line JFS
You need to un-mount the FS ( downtime is needed )
And use extendfs:
xtendfs -F hfs /dev/vg00/rlvol1
I think this should clear your doubts.
