Adding a Dell 51000cn Printer

I had a customer purchase a Dell printer and need it added to his HP-UX 11.00 server. Have anyone ever added this type of printer to an HP server before? If not how can I add this printer to the HP server. I used the lpadmin and it complain about the model type. Any suggestion will be apprecaited..

Shalom Ray,

For many reasons, Dell does not provide drivers for this printer for HP-UX.

What you may be able to do is set up the printer with cups or samba and let windows and Linux clients download drivers from the HP-UX server.

AS far as native to an HP-UX server, good luck, I don't think that will work optimally.

Not sure about how to use samaba to set this printer us. Do you have a link where I can goto to read on how to do this or have the instrcution handy? Anyway with the lpadmin command, how can I used this to just add the printer..

The command I treid was:

lpadmin -p'printename' -v/dev/null -mmodelname

Re: Adding a Dell 51000cn Printer

This printer supports the HP Port 9100 JetDirect protocol so you should be able to add it using hppi interactively or via addqueue from the command line (assuming that you have the JetDirect software installed on your HP-UX box).
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Adding a Dell 51000cn Printer

When I tried to add it using the jetadmin tool it's complaint because it can not communicated with the network card I assuming. Is that normally that it would have a problem when adding it with the jetadmin software...

I have added it and waiting on the customer to contact me so I can attempt a test page. Now if the test page goes successful then if you send specail character to a printer to print reports a certain font and with so many pages will these feature still be available as well?

Re: Adding a Dell 51000cn Printer

Remember, in UNIX there is no concept of a printer driver. All printer output is the sole responsibility of the application. To the extent that this printer emulates an HP LaserJet then PCL sequences should work --- although you will have to use -o binary in that case. You might also have to enable port 9100 TCP protocols on this printer -- all I know is that the online documentation states that port 9100 protocol is supported; if so, JetDirect should work -- although you will probably have to manually select a model script since I rather doubt that hppi will recognize this non-HP printer but I suspect that any ColorLaserJet model script will be close.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Adding a Dell 51000cn Printer

The Dell 5100cn printer, when added to CUPS, uses a Generic Postscript driver.

On HPUX I am using HP Color Laserjet 4500. Is printing text fine but unknown about the color capabilities.

Re: Adding a Dell 51000cn Printer

Hi,

I've done this already, but only use the Dell for postscript prints.
Yes - it's normal that jetadmin is complaining about the network communication if it not a HP printer (almost).
You just have to ignore it :-)
I use the configuration tool in SAM to setup the printers, so I can't say how to do in command line.
I've tested different configurations and found that the dell works if I annouce it as a 'net_generic_printer'.
