advice needed on configuration of new SAS controller on rx3600
This is my first new hpux server since the L2000 came out and I am finding myself lost in the technology changes.
I have a HP 8 port SAS controller on a rx3600 (hpux v3) and it has qty 4 72GB drives. I want to have one of the 4 discs as a hot spare and and wondering what raid level I should run. Server will be running Oracle 10gr2. This array will be used only for the o/s and oracle, the database and logs will be stored on a SAN.
Any directions is appreciated!
Thanks!
Danny

Re: advice needed on configuration of new SAS controller on rx3600
The SAS controllers are limited in functionality. Hot Spare and mirror. That is about it.
Enjoy.

Re: advice needed on configuration of new SAS controller on rx3600
The rx3600 has an option for an adaptec hardware raid controller for the SAS disks.
This will let you set up raid just like a Proliant server and is the way to go for Oracle.
Raid 1 for the data/index/redo, raid 5 for other stuff.

Re: advice needed on configuration of new SAS controller on rx3600
The default SAS built-in controller can do 2 mirrored pairs + hotspare, that's it.
The *optional* P400 is a smartarray and can do what a smartarray is able to do ...
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

I only need one array for the o/s and oracle install so I think I might have an extra drive?
thanks!

Re: advice needed on configuration of new SAS controller on rx3600
Swap and dump areas really should NEVER be the same, even though that is the default.
If they are the same, then you run the risk of swap activity overwriting a crash dump at a most inconvenient time.

If you want to have a hot-spare you need another disk or another controller, because you have 4 disks now.
Hope this helps!

Torsten.
