Re: Any comments?

That's French. Right?? ;-)

From what i can see, it talks about HP-Compaq merger. It's still a see-saw battle and turning out to be a grand sopopera where speculations abound.

The HP foundation that holds a few percent of stock has turned down support of the merger.

Re: Any comments?

Last I heard both sides had the lawyers lined up and were going to shoot it out, but I don't know which side is more likely to win. sounds like it's family vs. the rest.

Re: Any comments?

I was watching a special edition abt this deal yesterday. The analysts says it will be a bad news if it doesn't happen. Now we will wait and see how the market reacts !

Re: Any comments?

First the Hewlett family spoke out against the merger but took no action. Now the Packard family is speaking out against the merger and is taking action with their shares. If both the Hewlett and the Packard families act against the merger it will likely be halted. This would put both individual companies into interesting positions due to the fact that in preparation for the merger each side has aired all of their dirty laundry to the other and shown each other all that they have in the works on their engineering sides. I think that the merger would be good, especially if HP-UX gained Tru-Clustering. Well, hope this helps.

Compaq's stock dropped yesterday mainly because of rumors that Compaq execs were going to vote against the merger.

Re: Any comments?

Hi,

In my humble opinion, I would think that HP internally should have decided on the merger decisively before even approaching Compaq.

That would have avoided washing bad lining in public.

Regards.

Paul, thanks. That was a good one ;-)
Merger or not, expect "intresting" times ahead for HP !. Either there will be a merger or an ouster.

Re: Any comments?

I think Mark Vollmers has made a valid point - lawyers lined up on both sides, so whatever happens THEY will make a lot of money :-(

I thought the deal had already gone through, that was the impression given a couple of months ago.

Re: Any comments?

Working for a shop that does both HP and Compaq channel, get a lot of different ideas...

"The Hewlett and Packard family voted against the merger. It is now looking a bit shaky."

"Capellas stated emphatically that he fully supported the megamerger, but that the company also has a contingency plan in case the merger does not go through."

http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/01/12/11/011211hncapellas.xml

"Things don't look good in merger-land. Just minutes ago, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation announced that it has "preliminarily" determined to vote its shares of HWP stock against the company's proposed acquisition of Compaq."

Re: Any comments?

The stockholders have not even voted yet and it does not look good for this deal to happen.

Carly will be out, Compaq will sell more Tandem computers, HP will sell more UNIX servers.

Personally, I thought it would be a good deal as there are still too many PC vendors. The merger would have brought togetherness.

Re: Any comments?

Given that there is a $675 million liquidation penalty for either side for backing out of the deal, they are going to deny this as long as possible.
