Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
before I start spreading my trouble with getting NRPE to work
I would like to see if anyone at all is using Nagios on HPUX boxes.
I can't beleive that those who monitor are all pampered OV users ;-)

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
Nagios (which is said to be an artificial acronym of the words Network and the Greek Hagios (= saint) is the descendant of NetSaint.
Nagios is an OpenSource network management/ monitoring system similar to the big players BMC, Tivoli, OpenView etc.
It is highly extendable by proviosion of e.g. custom made plug-ins.
It looks like a great tool if you cannot afford the above mentioned.
Have a look at
http://www.nagios.org/
to find out more.

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
thanks for pointing this one out to us.
It appears the ease of custom monitor scripts is a key to this system.

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
Admittingly we only used it for basic monitoring (up/down), but it worked very well.
Like any software of this type it does take a lot of configuration, but if you are on a tight budget...

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
I don't remember a contact address, but this would at least suggest some of these systems using NPRE on HP-UX. Maybe someone of them will notice this thread.
I myself only do regular monitoring of my hp-ux box from nagios, as I didn't yet start with NPRE :((

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
when choosing a simple solution we started off using BigBrother and switched over to nagios. I regretted the decision which was mostly based on the nicer look&feel of nagios, while the configuration and clients - at least in my experience - of BB are more mature.
On the other hand I know a company that used the commercial version of BigBrother with little trouble in general, BUT one problem:
After startup, BB would need up to 45minutes to gather full stati. I remember seeing the same behaviour (in smaller scale) during our testing. Nagios will provide a reasonable overview for my monitored hosts after about 3 minutes and will *state* which tests are yet to run.

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
meanwhile I subscribed to the nagios users and plug-ins mail lists, and pester them.
I also discovered prebuilt binaries for HPUX from the Nagios Exchange site.
Also someone from the mail list pointed me at www.bennyvision.com for binaries.
I haven't tried the latter yet,
but those from the official NRPE site didn't work either for me.
Well, that's not quite true.
Some less involved NRPE checks like check_disks do work (even with my own build).
What I'm struggling with is the check_oracle.
Some other one from the list suggest to me the nrpe daemon not having started through inetd, but rather start up as stand-alone daemon.
Maybe this will work better?

Re: Anyone having HPUX nodes monitored by Nagios NRPE?
This product can run on RH AS Linux, HPUX, and Winbloz. Has various plugins so you expand your capabilities. Is a low cost product. The SIM is free, some of the plugins are cost products but not all.
Bast of all, if something soes not work as advertised, you have HP support.
