applications CD

I am still in the planning phase of an upgrade to my K460 machine...I will be doing a cold install of 11.0 on this machine...this will be the first OS install I have done, so please bear with me if the questions sound a little 'basic'.....I have been reading all kinds of documentation on the docs web site..however, they do not explain the codeword issue very well....my question...
after I have loaded the Core OS, ACE, Supplemental to the system, I have been planning to do an frestore of the 10.20 backup tape of the oracle, cobol, C, and other local programs right back out to the system...
If I do this will swlist still pick up all the products I have on this machine, or do I need to reinstall the application software (oracle, cobol, C, etc)

second: I am going to use the september 2000 Application CDs...one of the web sites talked about a utility to run a list of the table of contents, when I do this each application's (including user license, hp-pb 100BT, etc) "codeword required" entry has a 'no' by it...I am confused, I thought to load the application software I needed to have a codeword to "unlock" the software....thanks..I plan to do this the weekend of the 17th of Feb as it is a holiday weekend....Thanks for your help..Jay

Re: applications CD

The Oracle is OS dependent. You will need to get a copy of oracle for 11.0. There were different release for 10.20 and 11.0. The 10.20 oracle from the frecover will probably not work.

As for the codes. I have gotten the same code stuff when access the app cd. However, I ignore it and have had no problems loading from it.

If I had only read the instructions first??

Re: applications CD

You better reinstall the C also as they use different libraries between 11.0 and 10.20. The same is tru for some versions of Oracle if using C for Oracle devel.

Re: applications CD

Codewords are specific to an individual applications cd; or in other words you need to get a new one issued to you each time you use a different cd. In the actions menu of swinstall it has an option to install the codeword. Many of the applications come as part of the OS and will display in the swinstall menu. After you have installed the codeword the menu will be updated and will show all the additional applications that you have paid for that are contained on the cd you are working with.

All of the applications that you mention are very different at 11.0 and should be installed from either the new applications disk or from the vendors application disk as applicable.

When I rebuild a system I usually frecover a copy of the /etc directory but DO NOT RESTORE IT DIRECTLY TO THE NEW /etc DIRRECTORY. This becomes a handy online reference to your previous configuration.

The other thing that I thought should be mentioned is that you need to install the general release patches after everything is said and done.

Re: applications CD

Additonal info: there are some applications that are free on the App CDs so no codeword is needed to make them visible. You can see see the complete contents listed in a simple ASCII file called CD_TABLE_OF_CONTENTS which is on each CD. This file contains a list for all 4 or 5 CDs.

As mentioned, codewords are tied to the exact CD part number, customer number and application. Change any of these and the codeword won't work.

Upgrading from 10 to 11 will require a completely new set of codewords for the 11.0 application CDs. The 10.20 CDs won't install on 11.0 and restoring development tools like compilers and linkers from a 10.20 to an 11 system is not going to work very well at all.

Re: applications CD

I do very appreciate everyone's help on this...hopefully this is the last question of my planning phase....I have to use the 11.0 CDs from August 1998...the only question I have is the 100baseT btlan4 driver...can I get it from the OS Core CD, or is it on the appl CD also....thanks again for your patience and help...you have made this task alot easier to deal with....Jay

Re: applications CD

You need a more recent version of the CDs. In 1998, there was no btlan4 driver. The current version of the Application CDs is Dec 2000.

Note: Some mfr's fail to update their docs, especially when there are references to other vendor products The 1998 ref is likely very outdated. Check with the vendor. Loading rfeally old Application CD's onto a new install may produce an unstable result.

Re: applications CD

Bill .. thanks for the reply so quick..however, I told you the wrong driver...
the driver this particular machine is using is btlan1...does your reply still remain the same?

another question..what can I use to see which version of 11.0 is currently running on a machine, whether it Aug 98, Nov 99, etc....

thanks..Jay

Re: applications CD

Hi Jay,

btlan1 should be OK but, as said before, you'd better to contact your HP salesperson to get a new application CD (December 2000).

As you'll have to ask for new codevords anyway, and as a codeword is only valid for a specific CD release, you should ask for both at once.

Regarding applications (compiler, Oracle...) their 11.0 version sometimes differs from the one running on 10.20. Restoring your database executables from a backup tape won't give you much chance of success. If your Oracle version allows installation on 11.0, you should do a fresh install and import your data. This supposes that you've done an export before ;-)

Good luck,

Dan
