Any change in .profile file?

Re: Ask for login id & hangs

Any error messages in event viewer?

Who are you logging in as?

Possibilities:

1. User profile may be damaged. (Repair, restore or re-create)

2. Registry may have grown larger than was allotted. (Increase the allowed size under performance settings)

3. May be time to schedule a reboot.

4.An ip confilct can also hang the box at login

Moreover I would also check if the system is properly patched as this will lessen these hangs.

PHKL_23409 NFS, Large Data Space, kernel memory leak
PHNE_27902 Cumulative STREAMS Patch
PHNE_29473 cumulative ARPA Transport patch
PHNE_26096 telnet kernel and telnetd(1M) patch
PHCO_27721 login(1) cumulative patch

Re: Ask for login id & hangs

Why suggesting old 11.00 patches for telnet while we don't know the OS version - but it is SSH?

Since you still have access check the (syslog) log files and do a "bdf".

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Somehow these suggestions seem to be Windows centric. I seriously doubt they have any useful application on an HP-UX server.

The above are the usual cure-alls for windows.

HPUX doesn't have a registry, and boots usually aren't required to "fix things"

Re: Ask for login id & hangs

Check for all the vg00 Filesystems whether anyone running out of space.

Check the .profile file.

Thanks

Re: Ask for login id & hangs

Check if some root user has tried to "improve" critical directory permissions. These directories must have these permissions and ownerships:

ll -d / /dev /etc /var /usr
drwxr-xr-x 30 root root 8192 Jun 23 13:36 /
dr-xr-xr-x 18 bin bin 8192 Jun 23 13:38 /dev
dr-xr-xr-x 32 bin bin 8192 Jul 24 22:37 /etc
dr-xr-xr-x 25 bin bin 8192 May 19 2006 /usr
dr-xr-xr-x 27 bin bin 8192 Oct 26 2006 /var

Re: Ask for login id & hangs

See Bill Hassel's response. I once did a file restore and inadvertently had the files relocated to root. The restore software changed the permissions on "\" to Owner read only and I had the same problem. Luckily I was still logged in as root on a different session and was able to put the permissions back and get on my way.

Re: Ask for login id & hangs

Thanks all for the time...The issue is due to DNS server failure. So after removing the /etc/nsswitch.conf & /etc/resolv.conf the system starts working.

Thanks again for your time.
