autoboot & autosearch values

hi,

Actually I am seeing that autoboot and autosearch values on my superdome are set to on.
I really wonder what ideally autosearch value shall be? Can some one please let me know how it works and what it shall be?

Best regards
Thanks
Prashant

Re: autoboot & autosearch values

Hi Prashant,

Autosearch is just as it implies. The system goes out & searches the HW paths & boots from the first bootable device found.
I set all my systems to autosearch=off just in case I leave a bootable tape or CD in the drives. I certainly don't want to boot off those inadvertently. But you'll find that some of us here like it on. I don't.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: autoboot & autosearch values

Autosearch means if the boot disk is unavailable or the alternate boot device (usually the mirror disk) then it will search for other boot disks, lan, cd, tape etc.

We also set all our autosearch options to OFF. We dont want our servers to boot of say a CD someone left in the drive, or a lan ignite server someone has misconfigured. Much safer to leave autosearch off.

Re: autoboot & autosearch values

hi,

autoboot : sure, we want our systems to boot up after a power outage etc. without manual intervention.

autosearch : hmmmm, primary & alternate boot path should be sufficient. You don't want to boot accidentally from an old boot tape (as alread mentioned) or from an new added disk with boot partition of an other/older system.

regards,
Thierry.
All unix flavours are exactly the same . . . . . . . . . . for end users anyway.
